JR Freight Suspends all trains over concerns over data tampering.

Recommended Posts

Hope nobody is waiting for any parcels. All JR cargo trains have been cancelled today, which must cost the company a huge loss in revenue, not to mention the compensation they will probably have to shell out to large contracts like Yamato and Sagawa who have posted on their relevant websites about delays.

From what I can make out,  there has been some tampered data found at a depot in Hiroshima over the safety of wheels and axle assembly. Apparently a good number of their rolling stock may have been affected by additional pressure when assembling parts, causing increased damage to axles and metal fatigue to accelerate. Data was changed to fall within the standards for pressures placed on parts during assembly. This comes off the back of the derailment near Shin-Yamaguchi in July.

I never saw further details on the derailed EF210 in Yamaguchi.  Did a wheel actually break?  I figured it just picked a switch.

Yeah this must be bad financially for JR Freight.  First I thought it would mess up equipment placements, which I guess it does, but everything is where it's meant to be, just 24 hours later.  The personnel aspect must be worse.

I wonder when this was? Yesterday and today freight has been running.

The YouTube video was posted yesterday (1 D ago, not sure how that works with the time differences).  The text with the video says inspections were on the 11th that found the potential issues.

Translated text from the video descriptions:

JR Freight temporarily suspended all trains after finding new carriages for which it had not been able to confirm whether data had been falsified when assembling train wheels and axles.

The falsification was discovered at three carriage depots in Hiroshima, Kanagawa, and Hokkaido, and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism conducted on-site inspections on the 11th.

A total of 564 carriages were found to have falsifications, such as the pressure when attaching the wheels to the axles exceeding the standard, but changing the values to within the standard. When pressure exceeds the standard, the axles are damaged, accelerating metal fatigue, and in the worst case, they may break.

JR Freight temporarily suspended all trains on the 11th after finding that it had not been able to confirm whether data had been falsified in 300 more carriages.

The falsifications were discovered during the investigation into the cause of the freight train derailment that occurred at JR Shin-Yamaguchi Station in July, and falsifications were also found in the carriages that derailed.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism will take strict measures based on the results of the on-site inspection.
