Train related photos and memories from my 2024 trip to Japan

I took quite a few train related photos during my spring trip to Tokyo that I planned to share here, but haven't gotten around to doing it until now. I went during late March/early April and my base was a nice small hotell/hostell in Tokyo paying 4800 yen per night. After arriving at Haneda I entered a Bic Camera store at the airport, picked up and installed a 30 days SIM Card for about 3000 yen that provided me with more data than I needed.

I won't bore you with my non-train related activities, so I'll get straight to my trip with the Enoden Line between Kamakura and Fujasawa.

Kamakura Station.

Before catching the Enoden train I did some sight seeing activities in Kamakura. It's a popular place for a daytrip for anyone staying in Tokyo and is quite a touristy spot with lots of things to see and is a place I want to visit again.

I was not exactly the only person catching the Enoden that sunny spring day. 😄  My plan was to get off the train at Kamakura Kokomae Station and then walk along the line passing Koshigoe Station and get back on the train at Enoshima Station.

The first thing you see at Kamakura Kokomae is the Pacific Ocean.

There are several of these little railway crossings with the ocean in the background.

With the ocean behind my back.

There were plenty of people taking pictures. I realised that if I were to wait for a train at every photogenic spot I wouldn't get very far, so I walked along in the direction of Koshigoe Station.

As the line passed around a curve I found what appeared to be a train otaku with a camera waiting there, so I decided to wait next to him and caught this picture.

After this curve the line leaves the beach front and starts winding between houses instead.

No wonder this line is popular to model.

Next is Koshigoe Station where the street running starts. It's a bit late here now, so I think I'll wait to post more photos tomorrow instead.

This is from a crossing just before the train reaches Koshigoe Station.

Here the is train standing at the platform.

Some girls on the train saw the same crazy foreigner taking pictures every time they passed by a building and started waiving at him. 😆

Moving out from the station, on to the street running section of the line.

Here I took note that in order to model a realistic street running scene I need a bicyclist with a surf board.

Going down this road in a big vehicle doesn't seem advicable.

Drivers have to take care to not get caught in traffic in the wrong place.

That's wild!

It kinda is, but also the speed limit is 30 kph, about 18 mph. I bet the tram doesn't move any faster than that either.

There are similar set-ups in Dublin and Manchester, and they only occasionally result in disaster.

Let's see if I can wrap up posting photos from my daytrip along the Enoden Line.

Next to Enishima Station there's a place where the trains turn at an intersection.

This is clearly a place where someone with an interest in photographing trains could spend a lot of time. There was a Japanese guy at the intersection who looked a lot more experienced than me with these kind of things.

Finally a shot with no cars in the way.

This is where the street running ends.

At this intersection there is also what appears to be a train that has derailed and smashed into a small shop.

I believe this is just the end of an interurban cut off and mounted on the building. 😎 These were single units that ran in two car trains.  The NT18 was Modemo's early model of the Enoden 600s.

That would explain the lack of emergency vehicles at the scene. 😄

Taking a photo of a railway station while standing on the tracks is not something we get to do much in Sweden.

Standing on track meant standing on a point, because this is crowded Japan where the switchwork has to be located in the middle of a street intersection.

I finally got on a train, after having spent a lot more time along the street running section than I thought I would.

A small train otaku recorded a cab view video all the way to the terminus.

My train ride back to downtown Tokyo where I had a start time for an event to get in time for got a bit more eventful than I had asked for, as my JR East train came to a longer halt than normal at a station. Unlike the usual boring excuses in Sweden like signal error or too many leaves on the tracks, malfunction of the natural disasters emergency system at least sounded a little bit more impressive.

After a while I noticed the train car starting to get rather empty as people exited to board north bound trains that kept departing from the other side of the plattform. As another train arrived, I decided to take my chances with a train heading towards an unknown location. That turned out to be a good gamble as the train was to stop in Yokohama, which was definetly in the right direction and a good place from which to catch new trains. The screens on the train indicated some kind of widespread problem on JR East lines, also affecting the Yamanote Line, so I rerouted my travels to go via Tokyo Metro lines and I reached my final destination with a few minutes to spare.

Gotta love Tokyo with its multiple ways to catch trains from one place to another.

Enoden is awesome. I never seem to get enough time to enjoy it because I'm always with people that just view it as transportation.

If you look at that photo of the switchwork in the street carefully, you will see that they cleverly managed to locate the movable tapered points just beyond the paving.

One thing I love about Japan is that when they build something, someone puts some thought into it. They do sometimes build rows of identical buildings, but it's rare and more commonly everything is custom designed by an architect to suit the location. It leads to unique and interesting places like that, and clever solutions to problems like locating points by a crossing.
