Mudkip Orange
So I only just recently discovered realtime.nationalrail.co.uk. It's a digital arrivals/departures board for every station in the UK, and if you click on a train, it'll give you that train's history. (you can even see where there's schedule padding - like a Southern train that's 7 minutes late at every stop and then, magically, is on time after a certain point). For instance, check the departures board for a station like Clapham Junction: http://realtime.nationalrail.co.uk/ldb/sumdep.aspx?T=CLJ Awesome. My question: Do any of the JR companies have something like this in real time? And does it work for the smaller, unmanned stations the same way realtime.nationalrail does? Link to comment
bill937ca
Why? Japanese trains are always on time. If they aren't its front page news. Link to comment
bikkuri bahn
Like Bill says. It's a cultural aspect- In Japan people assume the trains will be on time, and railways companies are expected to adhere to schedules to the minute. Witness multiple apologies by train staff if a train is even a minute or two off schedule (my personal experience this winter vacation on JR East, due to heavy snowfall). Of course acts of nature, people offing themselves, etc. happen which lead to delays and service cancellations. However, delays due to maintenance issues, equipment unreliability, or labor disputes (or safety violations) are not tolerated by the general public. If trains are delayed (for any reason) passengers are expected to obtain an excuse slip from the railway to show to their employers, as proof that indeed, the trains were late. The JR companies do have regularly updated status reports on any delays/service disruptions on their respective websites. Also, the morning TV news reports on service disruptions, often in conjunction with the weather report. JR East's line status page (clicking on the area categories yields line status or disruptions, if any): http://traininfo.jreast.co.jp/train_info/service.aspx Record of delays on JR East commuter lines in the Kanto region: http://traininfo.jreast.co.jp/delay_certificate/index.aspx Link to comment

westfalen
I remember during one visit to Japan while I was in Kyushu a typhoon hit the Tokyo area. TV news reports of the typhoon seemed to concentrate on delays to train services. Link to comment
