Which rolling stock Kyoto region

Huib

Recommended Posts

Dear all,

I am new to this forum and to modelling Japanese trains, so please forgive me if I am asking anything stupid 😉

I am planning a small N gauge layout inspired by a branch line in the Kyoto region. Part of the layout will be operated by electric rolling stock. However, I am struggling to find the rolling stock that is correct for a branch line in this region. Could someone point me in the right direction which Tomix or Kato set I should get? The set should consist of 2 (minimum), 3 or 4  (maximum) cars.

Thanks a lot, Huib

Hi @Huib, and welcome to the forum! Don't worry about asking any stupid questions - asking questions is a great way to learn.

There aren't terribly many electric branch lines in the Kyoto area, the majority of lines in that region that I'm aware of, and other forum members will chip in if I'm wrong, are mostly main or secondary main lines. As to rolling stock you'd see in that area, both Kato and Tomix currently offer quite a bit of rolling stock suitable for the present day:

  • 221 series: Kato 10-1491 (Â¥13,750) or 10-1581 (Â¥15,180)
  • 223 series: Tomix 90180 starter set (Â¥21,780) or 98391 train pack (Â¥16,060)
  • 225 series: Tomix 98242 (Â¥17,160); Kato 10-029 starter set (Â¥21,450) or 10-1439 (Â¥23,100)

Depending on how far you want to go back, Tomix has also produced models of the 201 series (Tomix 98813, ¥21,340), and the Nara Line 103 series units (98422, ¥19,360) which ran as four- or six-car sets, though the latter are now less readily available since the last two four-car sets were retired in 2020. If you wanted to find one, then I'd recommend getting an account with a Japanese proxy buying service like Zenmarket or Buyee, and seeing what you can find through them.

I hope this helps to point you in the right direction!

Hi @Huib

Do not forget the Kintetsu rolling stock like the Kintetsu 26000 Series Sakura Liner (4 cars) as well as some other Kintetsu rolling stock (22000 series)

There is a lot of possibilities. You could also look at Micro Ace and Green Max offerings, they do the most private railways. I’m personally partial to the Keihan 800 which offers the possibility to do some street running. Though you might have to rely on the second hand market or a specialised importer.

Tomix and Kato both offer 221 -223 - 225 series as 4 car sets.

I'd suggest only buying one brand if you ever plan to couple them up for running longer consists.

I actually have those as Kato sets. And I got a Tomix 103 4 car Nara line set.

I basically brought all the JR commuter trains for Kansai area a while back. Mostly 4 car. But a few longer.

I can't really help you with which rolling stock is accurate for your settings, but judging by your previous projects, I'm certain this too will be a little masterpiece. I really enjoyed following your "Buitenlust" progress.

Definitely looking forward to see what you will do with a Japanese setting 🙂
