bc6
Ive been thinking about switching to DCC-EX are there any issues that I should be aware of? Edited July 11, 2023 by bc6 Link to comment
cteno4
I guess first question is are you a coder at all? Going open source like this you will need to probably get your fingers dirty in some coding to make things work past pre done stuff. jeff Link to comment
bc6
I don't really see myself doing anymore than out of the box stuff unless I dabble in automation. Link to comment

cteno4
Then I would stick to the out of the box control systems for now. Dcc overall requires getting more techie than dc even with out of the box systems. Highly configurable systems require you to go down the rabbit hole and through the looking glass. jeff Link to comment
bc6
It's too late to turn back now. I'm tired of NCE and I'd rather go down the rabbit hole. Edited July 12, 2023 by bc6 Link to comment
dotzen
If you stick to proven, supported hardware then DCC-EX is very much plug and play, no prayers needed. It's not out of the box, and wasn't designed to be as the hardware is open as well as the software, but with 'standard' hardware the installer works to take away all the configuration setup you would have to otherwise do yourself. There is support for all manner of options, and this is where the rabbit holes are. Automation with Ex-Rail does come with a learning curve, but so does iTrain. If you already have an Arduino sitting in the drawer doing nothing, then you obviously have the inclination to try DCC-EX. 2 Link to comment

dotzen
The DCC-EX team have just released v5 of their command station software which now includes a Track Manager function. This allows for the control of both DCC and DC trains from the one command station with full automation if that tickles your fancy. It certainly tickles mine. https://dcc-ex.com/index.html# Edited August 9, 2023 by dotzen added link to relevant web site 3 Link to comment

Madsing
I am following up with these releases too. The DCC-EX team is doing an outstanding job. I have not used that software yet but I plan to test it soon. Marc Link to comment
