Guest ___
This got me thinking. What if you could make your own drumhead and place it on the front of any train you want; what would it say? Link to comment
bill937ca
It's called a head mark or a tail mark depending on where it is placed on the train. There's a plan here, but its hard to read. http://www.tetsu-cafe.com/nippou/up_images/03010302522zumen.jpg Photos: http://nekosuki.org/landscape/index2/headmark.htm Link to comment

This is different than a destination mark. A head mark commemorates an event, an anniversary, a last run of a line or equipment or an inaugration of service. Railways with baseball teams frequently have baseball related headmarks. JR Blue Trains usually have a head mark on the electric locomotive and a tail mark on the rear coach. Of course, head marks for last runs attract platform ticket sales and ticket sales for commemorative runs which sometimes can number in the dozens, but usually with only 200-300 seats per train.
