alecpstan
Hi all, New to Japanese rail modelling and the forum, glad there is one for this prototype! Im modelling a wee micro layout (3 x 1ft quayside) in HO and having trouble finding some Japanese prototype fishing boats (1960-1970s specifically but at this point I’m getting less fussy) to decorate the ocean. Can anyone suggest a good place to look? Open to kits, 3d prints or complete models. Thanks in advance! Alec 1 Link to comment
bill937ca
Welcome. I think you will probably end up going the paper kit route like Sankei. Sakatsu Global has some boat kits. These are 1/80 which is normal for HO in Japan. https://sakatsuglobal.com/collections/ct136 But some of these are imports. Sankei 1/80 https://item.rakuten.co.jp/sankeishop/c/0000000110/ But even Sankei doesn't have anything. Link to comment
cteno4
That’s a tough one. Don’t think I ever ran across any fishing boats as I’ve roamed the web looking for papercraft files. I’ll go take a look in my file archives though, it’s 20 years worth. quick search around the web turned up a 1/64 aoshima fishing boat model. Tad big but boats and ships tend to run visually small as they are usually lower ceiling heights, doorways and tighter spaces. Unfortunately these are full hull and not waterline models so you would need to chop the hulls or embed them. Was this the type of boat you are looking for? https://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10137098 https://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10127295 few 1/87 scale similar styled boats on shapeways, tad more modern, but you could doll up with a lot of fishing gear. https://www.shapeways.com/product/HJT7GGDSC/1-87-usn-24-oswald-patrol-boat-waterline?optionId=57456432&li=shops https://www.shapeways.com/product/F44XZ8SXQ/1-87-riverine-patrol-boat-or-surc-with-weapons?optionId=62046159&li=shops There are the Tomytec boats in 1/150 that you could use as a model to maybe 3D print or scratch build. But sadly currently out of production. They will be rereleased at some point but probably available on yahoo jp auctions. https://www.1999.co.jp/eng/search?typ1_c=104&cat=&state=&sold=0&sortid=6&searchkey=Fishing+boat+tomytec the old greenmax fishing boats (oop) might be simple to scratch build with paper as their hulls are a bit blocky https://www.plazajapan.com/4946950216800/ Other papercraft boats out there that could be at the dock. Here is a generic work boat https://www.kallboys.de/vss-bonn small coastal freighters are all over Japanese ports http://emiliana.carapace.me tugboat and barges are also very common. Small tug and barge would be easy to scratch build as they are pretty blocky. Some ideas https://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10819144 https://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10930522 https://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10116560 https://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10320894 bunch of possible boats here https://www.papershipwright.co.uk/category/free-downloads/ cheers jeff Link to comment
marknewton
Alec, I'm modelling in 1/80, but I can't recall ever seeing a kit or made-up model of a typical Japanese fishing boat in my scale. They have a quite distinctive style of hull, the photos on this web page are a good illustration of that: https://boatflow.jp/en/boats/31746-omiya-shipyard-fishing-vessel All the best, Mark. 1 Link to comment

alecpstan
Thanks all, plenty of ideas to use in a pinch! There seem to be very close examples on 3d model websites which might be converted to an stl for 3d printing. My son (9) who loves trains saw ponyo the other day and thought it would be cool if there were trains on the wharf. So guess what scene he challenged me to model… Edited February 6, 2023 by alecpstan 2 Link to comment
