bill937ca
OK, I'll take Bernard's suggestion and start this thread as an off-shoot of "Running On The Floor". In my case I am in an apartment, a very generous apartment, but still an apartment. My layout currently is in the living room (I live here alone). There is lots of space for a dining table and living room sitting area. But there is still another whole side of the living room. My layout is on two 2 1/2' x 5' tables. Once they were in an L arrangement, but now they are long and narrow. I have a double track mainline, four track station accommodating 4-6 carswith a three track curve entering the station and a six track storage yard. I can't go over C354 radius for lack of room and I removed my elevated track from the layout a couple of years ago. In theory I can have an elevated line but the curves go right to the edge of the table. I dream of an 8' x 4' or 9' x 5' base (built with 4 1/2' x 5' panels used for building ping pong tables). That would probably put the layout in a basement. That would allow me to reinstall the elevated track, have a two or four track mainline and a container terminal along with stations accommodating at least 8 car trains, perhaps 10-12 car trains. I have most of the track, so all I need is a place to build the layout. Someday..... Link to comment
Bernard
Bill - Thanks for starting the thread and "Real Estate" to me is always the biggest obstacle. It took me quit awhile before I got a basement where I could build a layout. My basement is split into two rooms separated by a door. The layout is on one side, and on the other side, I store my trains in a bookshelf. My problem, our cats wait for me to open the door so they can quickly run into the room where the trains are running. :dog: As for storage of my trains, the N scale is in the bookcase boxes on a self and the HO, American Flyer, Lionel & LGB trains are in plastic bags or wrapped in newspaper in boxes on shelves in the basement. Martijn Meerts
The non-Japanese layout we're working on is located in a dedicated hobby room, although most rolling stock and scenery is stored on the attic for the moment. My Japanese stuff as well as my Marklin H0 and Lenz 0 are stored on the attic as well, with the Japanese being packed away in their plastic cases and those again in cardboard boxes (unfortunately :)) Link to comment
bill937ca
I guess the most common arrangements include, -apartment (co-existing with other living needs) -basement -spare room or garage and where none of those exist on the floor for short durations is a viable option for some. IST
We are living in a small apartment with my wife, so I do not have any fix layout. Maybe in 1-2 years. My Unitram set is currently on a TV bench (on this one: http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/90086805). Because of I have British trains which have no book type boxes, I looked after another solution to make taking out easier, see the picture. Not the best idea, but simple. (I do not know that we should open another topic about how to store trains, or it would be better change the name of this thread.) Link to comment
Lawrence
I'm still waiting on locos to arrive, just so that I can get an idea whether or not my track plan will work, however, it will be a 4 feet by 8 inch plank layout that will sit on my computer desk when I am working on it, and stand in a corner when I am not. IST - You have a really nice roster and I like the table where you store your trains but have you thought of lining the draws with something like "bubble-wrap" or something similar, just to protect your trains? Yes, my friend warned me that this type of sponge (or how it is called) can stick to the models, so I should change it to bubble-wrap which I did. This photo is quite old, I would like to show you only the box. Link to comment
IST
At Christmas, my wife asked me to take apart of the Unitram layout, because she wanted to put some candle on the TV bench. So I found a temporary place of the baseboards. Link to comment
