Any suggestions for a mini layout?

I am making a mini layout on the topic of the Ueda electric railway, in Nagano prefecture, or maybe a small industrial layout. (Still in the planning phase for my new layout, I wanted to restart.)

Just wondering if anybody had some tips or ideas.

What size/dimensions is small?

Layout is 4x4 in Japanese N Scale.

A point to point rural line in a big U shape. With a tall mountain in the middle of the U. Farms on outside.

 

Station at each end. With one station higher than the other, so you get uphill-downhill running.

This book has some cleaver ideas for small layouts. Might find some bits to combine. I’ve loved looking thru it.

If you are interested in something industrial you may want to draw inspiration from this layout by "Kaji".

 

 

It's 900x600mm. All of the construction is covered on his channel. 

He's also done some rural layouts ranging from 420x594 to 1200x600 in size.
