Tram Yard

Recommended Posts

Needed a tram yard so I thought I'd post the process.

Built the track plan and rolled over to CAD. From there I spec out the frame build with its parts and dimensions.

I cut the limber.

Need to cut the foam.

The yard is 12"x48" its a good desk top fiddle yard.

It has 10 sections that will report occupancy to a graphical display in JMRI.

This is a Unitrack version of a Tomytec 91016

Should have it assembled in a bit.

Finally stopped Lolly Gagging around. Version 1 framing wasn't up to par but I kept it to learn from.

Framing was a lot better here.

Version 1 with it foam cut. I'll install the track now.

Very nice work, inobu! What technique did you use to cut the foam?

Nice, it looks a bit like an architectural mockup with the foam cut and the track not yet in place 😄

I CNCed this but I posted a manual method years ago.

It was called Trenching Unitrack. I fixed the image links

Finished placing the cantenaries into position. I need to put some walk ways around the build and yards.

This is the test build. I will go through a complete build and resolve issue that comes up.

Track and block wiring is done. Tested the switches and they work. Testing the Block occupancy and

Rail Com is next.

Had to park the project but here is a quick update.

I'm at an impasse as I need to make a decision as to which detection unit I'm going to use. I have the ESU Railcom detector as well as the Digikeijs DR5088RC.

The ECoS Detector ties directly into the ECoS but only provides 4 Railcom ports of the 16. The DR5088RC provides all 16 port with Railcom but it used Loconet

to reports its detection. It converts Railcom data into a Loconet message for transport to the command station. In that case I need to add a L.Net converter

in order for the ECoS to read it. This cracks the lid on a whole new can of worms.

My intentions were to use ESU devices but I need to add 2 more Railcom detectors to cover the 9 or 10 zones. Now do I drop back to 8 zones and add one

50098 ECoSDetector which monitors 4 track sectors or add 2 to cover the 10 with 2 left over. The 50098 are $100 each.  😕

When I have time I will wire up the DR5088RC and see how it works with the ECoS.

I'm tracking the cost as well. This Tram Yard is an easy $1000. Material wise its at $441 at the moment. The tools to get you there is another story.

I'm jumping around as all of the pieces are bouncing around in my head. Here is the initial interface.

I got to get Python to handle some of the logic and keep track of the tasks. The Switch controls are generic

as I will come up with a better control switch later.

I need to get the wash station next or make my own not sure what I will do.

I've been caught up on another project but ordered the wash station which came in. I just need to see what they looked like and

I think I'm going to make my version of one.

I got the Greenmax 2811 -12

Hopefully I get back to this soon.
