I will note that the faregates are designed that if you do not swipe the card correctly, or you insert the wrong ticket that the gate was designed specifically to slam shut with enough speed and force to the groin area to allow for neighboring commuters to point and laugh at the stupid foreigner. Personal experience at Shinagawa dictates that statement.
