bill937ca
I'm thinking about a new layout which gets me thinking of the layout base. I currently have 1/2'' plywood topped by 1/2" Homasote. That in turn has been topped with 1/2" of WS Styrofoam after an aborted HO traction layout. What does everyone else use? I'm thinking of some combination of plywood and foam but beyond that I haven't decided on anything yet. Link to comment
Bernard
Bill - Here is what I did on my layout extension: http://www.jnsforum.com/index.php/topic,1987.0.html I used 1/2" plywood and then glued 2" foam board on top. The foam is great for dulling the sound and easy to carve lakes, ponds, rivers, etc. into it. Link to comment

It works fine, but I wish I had more zealously vacuumed up the foam crumbs as we went along. Link to comment
nik_n_dad
Started with benchwork from Sievers. Thin plywood over that, 2" insulating foam over that (and then more foam as needed for terrain). Woodland Scenics risers & inclines for smooth grades. Link to comment

nik_n_dad
The Sievers stuff is very nice. The use high-quality clear pine, and all of the holes are pre-drilled and perfectly aligned. They also have ample drilled holes for cable\bus routing. What's very nice is that they will make custom sizes for you (odd size, weird angles), so you're not limited to their "basic" shapes and sizes. Very nice people to work with- they even made suggestions on my order\drawings on how to order differently and save money. Building benchwork is just plain work. Nik & I assembled everything in just a couple of evenings with just a couple of wrenches, and no trips to the ER Link to comment
