scott
[i thought I had posted about this before, but can't find it, so forgive me if this is a repeat] Does anybody have any ideas about how we might replace some of the maps in the wiki? This map is a good example of a map that doesn't help anybody--no legend, no labels, no context--just some colors and lines that could mean just about anything. Does anybody have access to some public-domain maps, or is there some online DIY GIS thing, or .... ?? If we're going to have maps (and we should!), they should be useful! Link to comment
CaptOblivious
That is a terrible map! You raise a really good point, though. Have a look around Wikimedia Commons; they have some excellent SVG format maps, but usually of broad areas and not narrow zoom-ins. I don't know how legal it would be to supplement these maps with tracings from commercial satellite imagery, but that might be one possible route. (I actually tried this, with some good success, for an article for Tetsudo, but since I'm as yet unsure how legal it is, I haven't made the files publicly available.) Link to comment
