KTM announced they'll produce JR-E Series E4 Shinkansen "Max" in A/W 2021
The Coloring until 2014 is a limited item for a company store.

Not familiar with the manufacturer. Why would they make a product that both Kato and Tomix make?

KTM is a manufacture who produce HO scale by Brass.

They used to produce American Train like UP FEF-3 in 1960s

An 8 car E4 from KTM would set you back a cool ¥560,000.

 

They are very nice brass models assembled by hand. They have a Youtube channel.

 

 

@Modellbahn JP I seem to remember a shop selling HO shinkansen towards the top of one of the mall buildings next to landmark tower in Yokohama. Not sure if that was KTM or just an independent selling their products.

 

I remember being in awe but also being put off rekindling my interest in model railways as it was extremely pricey. I don’t think i was aware it was brass at the time. 

 

Anyway 4 years later i got into Japanese n gauge.

That would be a company shop of KTM in Yokohama.

They also deal items which are produced by other maker like Endo and Tenshodo etc.

My dream is to get KTM's Grand Hikari for 16-cars!

There's a store in a basement on the west side of Ikebukuro Station as well. I wandered in there once out of curiosity and smiled politely at the nice models and their prices before beating a hasty retreat.

 

(Mind you, compared to the O gauge models on display in Imon in Oimachi, it's almost a bargain).

I'd like to see how they form such a complex nose shape out of brass.....

This is when I question the necessity of brass models but I guess that’s KTMs thing.  Fantastic for old electric and steam locomotives with all the intricate details needed, but when it’s a smooth sided rectangular tube, with minimal roof equipment, why not use plastic considering how quickly Endo’s Dr. Yellows sold through. Personally my view is if you’re big into shinkansens, N covers the interest very well rather than having brass seating next to visible pickup and decoder wires and bogie securing bolts shining back at you through the windows. But I guess it’s only for those willing to part with the price of a kei car for a toy train.

They'll just cast those. A lot of the IMON brass kits for example already have quite a lot of cast bronze parts. For the EF66, the cab roof and nose are cast bronze. Even some World Kougei kits (including in N) have cast bronze parts, although they tend to go with white metal instead.

It does have some advantages. I noticed that IMON likes to specifically mention how their brass coaches are lighter than a plastic equivalent. If you have a large consist like a full size shinkansen, making the non-powered cars as light as possible will obviously be beneficial.

 

I do agree though, that for the detail there's no reason to do it in brass. There's also a good chance this would sell really well if they did it in plastic, probably enough for a decent production run. And quite a few people wouldn't care about the weight, since they'd just get an 8 car set at most.

Interesting that they're lighter. Also the advantage of the shells not having to be so thick to support windows etc. Just my experience of seeing modern expresses in brass has mostly felt a bit underwhelming, whereas when you see a brass loco from say, Musashino, it's like a work of art.

The other advantage is the lustre you can get in the paint finish. The 787 Around the Kyushu paint was particularly accurate, I thought , although I can't recall if that was KTM or Endo. Just seemed disappointing to not have the inner workings appropriately hidden for something that needed such a significant investment. 

As for the N700S, it seems each of the 4 coach packs to make up the full 16 coach formation have a motor unit so plenty of hauling ability I'm sure. 

 

I'm also probably just reliving the memory of my consideration to get back into railway modelling, visiting KTM in Yokohama's Landmark Plaza, seeing the HO shinkansen models and making the decision that Japanese railway modelling was not really in my hobby budget. It was a further 7 years before I took another glance and discovered Japanese N scale.

I can't say I've seen any brass expresses or anything up close. I do have various brass kits from IMON and World Kougei, and the detail on especially the locomotives is crazy.

 

The kits do generally have very thin brass, so it doesn't weight much in itself. The locomotives I've (partially) built have a lot of additional weights in them. The EF66 kit even comes with various tungsten weights. I tried running the C11 frame (without shell on) without any weights, and even without any rolling stock coupled up, it would just not move, wheels were spinning freely 😄
