When is a Shinkansen labelled as an E# or #00 Series?

The determining factor is the fact that the sets were build to be operated by JR East. You find the same occurences in recent EMUs and DMUs denominations.

JNR started out with odd numbers (0, 100, 300) on the Tokaido/Sanyo and even numbers (200, 400) on the Tohoku and Joestsu. After the 400 series Tsubasa, (which was introduced in 1992 but the design work would probably have started under JNR), JR East started using the 'E' prefix while the others carried on with the old JNR numbering system with the 500 and 700 on the Tokaido/Sanyo and the 800 on Kyushu.

And now I guess they are adding N700 and 700T to the mix.  I think they should find a standard numbering system!  The highest one can go is 900 series...then what's next?  ???

The N700 is a bit of an oddity because the the N700 is more of an evolution of the 700s rather than an entirely new and different model. Dave Fossit, had the expected future names of new shinkansens on his site before it went down. I do what to say he had listed the 900-series as replacing the 300's. not to say that's the 300's replacement, but he was pretty good at calling the 700T and the E5.  :BangHead:

What happened to Dave Fossett's site.  Byun byun site looks like it has been closed since April 2009.

Do you know if he has a new site now?

it was taking too much time so he closed it rather than let it fade away. he has no plans to re-open it.

I believe Dave Fossett had to give up Byun Byun due to time issues.

I think he's a regular contributor to the Wikipedia Shinkansen page.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shinkansen

Not so regular, I believe, as the part on the Chuo-Shinkansen, a MAGLEV-line (being built atm, done in 2025) is not being updated and the release of the E5 isn't on the page.

He's there a fair bit though if you scroll down and look for DAJF. http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Shinkansen&action=history

If you click on the E5 link you go to the E5 page it's all there up to the train appearing at Tokyo station. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E5_Series_Shinkansen which appears to be Dave's work. http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=E5_Series_Shinkansen&action=history

Dave did state on the Yahoo groups this past spring he intended to keep the shinaksen pages would be updated and a lot of his information from the site would be placed on the wiki.
