Tokyo shops video guide

Since I started going to Akihabara to shop for model trains a few years ago, I've always wanted to make a video with a quick guide on all my favorite shops, to help people who visit Tokyo for the first time and want to shops for trains. It took me a few trips to find all these shops, hope it's useful.

I've split it in two two parts, Part 1 is Akihabara:

Please let me know if I miss some 😉

Part 2 will be about Nakano Broadway and Shinjuku.

Wow.

It's been a very long time since Boston had any model train shops.  Way back when, we had 2.5 downtwon: Erich Fuchs, Charles Ro, and even the toy department at Woolworths had a decent selection of Tyco, AHM, and Atlas.

Charles Ro is still going strong, but couldn't afford city rents and moved out to Malden years ago, still with reasonable subway access on the T at least.  They specialise in Lionel and large scales, a reasonable selection of HO, but only a little N.

Sigh ....

This is a really useful video but a little painful to watch since I managed to miss just about all these shops on my recent visit to Tokyo!  I found Imon and went to the lower level of the Popondetta shop but never made it to the rest of the store since I didn't realize it was there.  I remember thinking there has got to be more since I had heard quite a bit about Popondetta - - turns out there is more, I just missed it.

I am going to watch the video again and note all the shops as I am hoping to get to Japan in a few months.  If I do, I will ask for more advice before I go - don't want to make the same mistake twice.  We are thinking of going to Osaka on the next trip but maybe we need to include Tokyo again.

Great video - thanks for posting it.

Hi Tony,

well, it took me quite a few trips to find all these shops, so don't feel bad if you missed them on your first trip! So you have a good reason to go back!

I did the exact same thing at Popondetta. I heard so much about it, then the first time I went it was only this ground floor shop. Only the second time I realized there were three more floors!

There are quite a few shops in Osaka as well, mostly around Nipponbashi: Popondetta, Volks, Kids Land, Hobby Land Pochi.

Thanks for the additional info on Osaka.  I hope to get to Japan in late May so plenty of time for me to research this in advance.  I typically do not purchase too much but it is always nice to bring back some items and it also helps me plan future purchases when I can see the models at a shop (as opposed to just seeing pictures).

Thanks!

Nakano Broadway is very convenient, cause in a small space there are three shops with a huge selection.

Great!  Another post showing all the places I walked by and missed!  We stayed near Shinjuku station on our first few days and did some shopping in the area.  I found the train section in Yodobashi but missed the other shops.  I am really happy to see these videos as they will be a big help on my next visit to Tokyo.

Thanks so much for posting them.
