do folks do any protective conductive grease in the track joiners to avoid corrosion in outside use like this?

 

ive dreamed of a backyard viaduct in G scale and building a 700 series to zip around. love the idea of r/c and using drop in battery packs instead of trying to power tracks.

Hi Jeff,

I m not that experienced,as you know,😂👍 but it’s not something I ve heard of.

In g scale the track and joiners are brass so do nt really corrode,I assume all makes are,tho they do recommend for outside that you use screw connectors and I think that’s for making sure a good connection at all times and also to stop it coming apart.

The larger scales usually have track that can be safely used outside without worries. LGB track especially was designed to be used outdoors, so I can't imagine that having any issues.

 

The only exception is possibly Lenz 0-scale track. Lenz themselves say it's fine for outdoor use, but I've read some posts by people who say their track has started corroding.

That was evil! Now I have visions of a shinkansen on my garden layout. Here is a video of a scratch built N700A.

 

Since shinkansens run on standard gauge track, the correct scale would be 1:32 for the 45mm "G" gauge track. That would make the head/tail cars about 33 inches. Impressive.

we have a thread on a G scale 500 that a chap has been building for a client and used extruded aluminum for the body as trying to scratch build the cross section other ways would be a pain. I love the 700 and the boxy cross section would make scratch building easier, but cutting windows would need a CNC or lasercutter...

Yesterday saw the basics complete,plants,pond and pond plants tho I need a few more of those and the white gravel.

everything running more or less ok but need to jiggle and level out the track in one corner which I ll do when I remove it to fit the screw connectors.

time to think about the buildings and where they re going👍😂😂

Yesterday some bits arrived to make a station.

i do nt want anything too grand as the layout is relatively small.

the building is actually the wrong way around but will be seen better from this angle.

more baseplates and buildings will sit in front,eventually.

So we had one day back in work to be told we are now furloughed till June 15th,however airbus are making respirators at the moment and I ve volunteered to help make them,waiting to hear.

 

so with all this time on my hands and decent weather I ve been spending a lot of time in the garden on the layout.

there are 4 basic areas,the station area and the 3 raised beds.

two of the beds are done,

the pond area with two lakeside huts and raised fishing cabin

 

 

bbq at the summerhouse and two allotment huts

I recieved the baseplates and glued them together then turned them over and welded them with the soldering iron and made the grooves for the wiring.

all the wiring is done for all the lights ad protected with plastic bags for now.

 

tested on workbench,

 

 

With no need to lift it again until I put it away for winter,I placed it back outside and connected it up,

 

 

just need to work out a material for the road but it looks like smooth,Matt finish rubber mating.

He has one in his train shed right there! I asked Paul that question when he was putting up the the train shed and he said the beer fridge was ready to go in! You know those most important points in planning a layout! 😜

omg, he has to lean forward to get a beer! It’s not built into the arm of the lounge chair! Was the beer cooler in there before a electric water pot for tea?

So still on lockdown work continues in the garden.

Few buildings added which now completes the main layout build.

next step is to add detailing,figures etc.

I ve also spent some time sorting out the two sheds.This shed is the main one for the layouts.

i ve now converted it to part summerhouse and part hobby room.I ve bought new shelf units and put a tv in there and some new flooring will be here any day now.

i kept the back baseboard in place and put a 30” shelf above which is where I ll put the garden buildings over the winter.

The baseboard I have at the back is 8’x2’6”.My wife thinks it’s a workbench,I have nt told her it’s for my next project! 😂😂technically I have nt been dishonest as she assumed,I did nt tell her!

 

 

at this point I m considering my options,a faller fairground in ho,a train layout in ho and as yet I have nt completely ruled out a return to Japanese n gauge!!😂😂 Another option is a combination of the above.😂😂 I miss my Japanese trains but it would have to be kept simple due to my hand issues.

My no 1 choice at the moment and the one I m looking in to,is to have a 12” shelf around the two sides and back mounted half way up with the faller fair rides on and then a simple Japanese n scale on the bottom.

plenty of pondering to do while I finish off the garden layout😂😂👍

Last few bits for the station area arrived,two buildings,burger bar complete with waitresses😂railings and fountain.The railings and fountain will also serve to strengthen the base plates.
