Wow... E257 on Tokaido main line services? Wouldn't that mean lesser E233s and their double deck cars on it?

 

I'm still waiting for one of the modellers to do the E353... i'm guessing Kato, since Tomix didn't even did the E351 nor the E257...

The E233 series (and E231-1000s as well) with double-deck green cars are used on local and rapid services on JR East's portion of the Tokaido Line.

 

The E257 series will replace 185-0 series trainsets from 1981 on Odoriko services from Tokyo or Ikebukuro to Izukyu-Shimoda.

Talking of E257s, I saw a couple in the yard at Oku today, which is highly unusual (at least from my limited observation) which would suggest an approaching north-south (rather than east-west) orientation.

The E257's are going to be refurbished (and likely have a smaller consist) for the Odoriko services, which will replace the aging 185 Series on that service. The 251's now on Odoriko service will be replaced by two E261 trainsets coming probably in 2019.

JR East have announced that the class 185 EMUs used on the Odoriko Limited Express between Tokyo and Izu will start to be replaced by ex-Chuo Line  257 series EMUs from spring 2020.

 

This will clear out one of the older remaining groups of EMUs. Attached is a JR East press release.

185s have had a hell of a long run.  I always wanted to ride a 185 set, especially on Hamakaiji service, but no such luck.

Sorry, this may have already been asked somewhere else, but does this mean that the 257-2000s will be used on Shonan Liner etc. services? Did I read somewhere that E353 would do those services?

I saw a video recently of the area between Tokyo and Shinagawa ca. 1983, one shot had some EF15s and EF58s with a then-almost new 185 in the background...

The E351s (and E257-0s) used to work Shonan Liner services, but that stopped years ago. AFAIK the E353s are all concentrated on the various Chuo Line services, a quick Google search doesn't show any indication they'll be used anywhere else.

E353 run all liners on Chuo, E257-2000 will run liners and Odoriko on Tokaido.  I think this will also end the 215 series sets.

Altough they don't run anymore on the Tokaido Line, it's very well possible, after all they're very experimental EMUs, and for a total of only 4 sets built, i'm actually surprised they managed to run to this day, altough on infequent services.

 

As of today they should be in use only on "Holiday Rapid Wiew Yamanashi" services on the Chuo Line, wich are seasonal-only trains from March to November...

 

Too bad... I have to admit i really like the 215 Series... they've got quite a distinctive appearance...

I see, but yes it probably just means the E353 will replace it, as it seems to be blotting out all express trains on Chuo for JR East.

A few of the surplus Chiba area 257-500 series have been moved to Toyada and run additional express services on the Chuo Line and Fujikyu line.
