Riding the Tokaido Line - how many sections?

Hello,

 

How many train changes/individual train sections would one have to do if one were to travel between Tokyo and Kobe using the zairaisen Tokaido Line? The first would be Tokyo to Odawara or Atami on a Tokaido Rapid train, but from there onwards I cant figure it out.

Check out Hyperdia Japanese train timetable. It has all the details you need.

Yup.  Hyperdia is your friend.  Unclick the planes ,buses private railway and shinkansen boxes.  And you should only have rapid and locals left.

Nick, according to Jorudan (unfortunately my favorite online timetable Ekikara bit the dust a while back), a 6:07 departure from Tokyo Station will require 6 changes of trains, and will get you to Kobe at 15:40, for a journey time of 9 hours 33 minutes, or 8 hours 46 minutes counting just time on the train. Cost is 9460 yen.
