ben_issacs
Folks, Gympie is a town in Queensland, and is the home of the Mary Valley Rattlers Society, a small railway preservation group. For the past eighteen months or so they have been restoring to operational condition Queensland Railways C 17 class 4-8-0 freight loco, No.967. This engine was built in Maryborough, Queensland, in 1950, and withdrawn from service in 1969. During the intervening years it had been moved around various sites, finally coming to the Mary Vale people. The C 17 class was the QGR's main freight loco type, 3'-6" gauge, of course, somewhat different to the various Japanese freight locos. 4-8-0s were fairly uncommon as a steam loco type, so it's good to see this engine restored. Regards, Q'ld Rlys. had an unusual system of classifying their steam locos. An alphabetical letter gave the number of driving axles, but as they had no locos with single driving axles, 'A' was applied to those with two driving axles, thus differing from the Continental system. This letter was followed by a number, which gave the cylinder diameter in inches. A somewhat unusual system! Bill, Melbourne. Link to comment
katoftw
I remember seeing it all laid out in its 1000s of parts two years ago. And saw a photo of them removing the excess welds from the boiler holes last week. These jobs take a long time. Link to comment
