Steve
Hi, with the complete of elektrification on the Tokaido Main Line in 1956, die Tsubame and the Hato Trains got a Green Livery. How long was this Livery used and which Locos (expect EF58) and Coaches got this? Greetings Edited June 25, 2019 by railsquid Fix spelling Link to comment
railsquid
AFAIK this was in use between 1956 and 1960, when the loco-hauled Hato/Tsubame services were replaced by the 151 series EMU. Only used on EF58s and the coach sets used on those services. Link to comment
ben_issacs
Steve, These trains were the JNR's crack expresses, Tokyo-Osaka-Kobe. First Division, 'Tsubame' (Swallow), Second Division, 'Hato' (Dove). Usually thirteen cars. The green sets were sometimes called 'Aodaisho', sometimes translated as 'Big Green Snake' which they certainly looked like, sometimes 'Big Green General". Kato put out a double set of the Tsubame, six and seven cars, one set of which was Cat. No.10-428. On a trip to Japan I found in a second hand model shop a bookcase box for 10-428, which had been converted to take twelve of the cars, so grabbed it! The green EF 58 loco wasn't easy to get, for a while it ran with a grape coloured EF 58, but finally one turned up. There was also an an additional first class car available, also later bought. These first class cars, also the observation car, first class, were air-conditioned, obviously for foreign tourists. On a big layout, this makes an impressive train. Regards, Bill, Melbourne.
