Ballast materials: good, bad, ugly?

What materials have you tried for ballast? Is your ballast permanently attached, and with what, and to what?

 

How well does your material blend, or contrast, with Kato or Tomix track beds?

Kato makes a balast mix to try to match their ballast pattern/colors.

As for coloring, here's a stock photo for your consideration. This it pretty extreme, but from my in person observation there is quite a bit of variation in ballast coloring in the Japanese prototype. The Shinkansen tracks seemed the most uniform. For my seaside layout I'm aiming for a grungy (and overgrown) look.
