I think people would genuinely be horrified if they knew all the information people collect about them, even wehn they think they are doing a good job of being "off the grid"

To be honest I think this falls into the category of "good policing, great investigative skills and deduction" rather than invasion of privacy, on scales like the NSA, China, Google, Facebook etc. do.
