KiHa Configurations

What’s the maximum number of single and twin-unit KiHas run as a single train?  I run all my KiHa 110/111/112s as a six-car train for convenience, but I haven’t seen any photos for KiHa series trains with more than four cars.

That is something that very much depends on the exact train type. For example, in the case of the KiHa 110 series a 6-car consist is not out of the ordinary.

Oh... Well, as they say, there’s a prototype for everything!

 

I guess I was primarily thinking of the KiHa 40/47/48 series and 100/110 series.  I didn’t know if maybe there was a technical limitation or if it isn’t operationally feasible to run so many individual cars coupled together versus a longer fixed consist (don’t know if that’s a factor that plays into rolling stock selection).

Last time I was in Fukuoka, I say a consist or 10-12 units or 40s/47s/48.  All empty and being returned to the depot.

This is the kind of example I was looking for. A 10-car KiHa 58 series consist running as a Rapid service.
