HantuBlauLOL
I was reading about Metro 05 sets in wikipedia, and found that three cars from 05-111 set wasn't scrapped or sold overseas right away in 2010, but sent to Kinki Sharyo instead. https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/営団05系電車 in the Indonesian page however, i found that this set is getting converted to DEMU, But i still can't find its actual source. This definitely sounds interesting as i never found anything like this before in Japanese railroads. Hours later, i managed to found this tweet. This picture clearly tells that it's getting a diesel engine inside, instead of underfloor engines like usual. or is it just for powering the electricals? the underfloor components are also unusually big. https://mobile.twitter.com/hankyu6450/status/567322632375128065 Still no explanation here, can't find any other source. But sadly, this set is finally scrapped before even getting used. https://mobile.twitter.com/caltex9900/status/811207822352359424 Anyone knows what actually happened did to this set? Link to comment
Socimi
Seems there's very little information with the fate of set 05-11, altough i dobut it was converted into a Diesel multiple unit (that would be Niigata Transys matter) as Kinki Sharyo manufactures only electric trains (EMUs, LRVs et cetera). I think instead it was used as a testing bench for the Smart BEST battery-powered train wich was introduced in 2012. If you look at the twitter you've posted (https://mobile.twitter.com/hankyu6450/status/567322632375128065) you'll see that the underframe equipment of the Smart BEST and the one under the 05 series look very similar. Furthemore, if you look on the left of the 05 series, the almost hidden train appears to be exactly that Smart BEST! Edited October 4, 2018 by Socimi 1 Link to comment

Btw, looks like they really planned to put a diesel engine in one car. This one is from the Smart BEST set. bikkuri bahn
Quote But why they didn't continue using the 05 platform? These surplus units are essentially free (they have fully depreciated), so Kinki Sharyo saw it as an opportunity to pick up a cheap test bed for the cost of transportation only. Once they served duty as a test beds, they were no longer needed. Kinki Sharyo, as a railcar builder, would then build from scratch the final design. Link to comment

Were these the predecessors of the new hybrid sets we see today? Btw. the diesel generator above the floor design was very common in the past, including the earliest De Dillion-Buton railcars or the British thumper demus. It's a very simple and easy to integrate way of having a power source on board. Afaik the new hybrid sets have proper under floor diesel generators, except maybe the Shiki-Shima, which seems to have them somewhere towards the back of the lead cars. Link to comment

It's probably used as an emergency backup should the batteries fail. (The 05 series did not need one as they were almost certainly used in static tests to gauge the effects of the added weight of the batteries) Link to comment
ConnieCommie
A similar concept is currently being put into use in the UK, where old London Underground cars are being converted into BEMUs and DMUs. 1 Link to comment
