domino
Thanks all, i think i got it now. Alpine, yes the DF200 is easy to install in, no isolating needed But i have some problem with the drop in decoder for my 683 Shirasagi, it is completly dead , but if i press really hard down on the metal frame i can hear the motor humming(is that a word??) not running but humming, i have tryed to put some thing in betweeen the motor pickup and the decoder pickup to get them closer together ,but no luck, does any one have any ideas ?? I did try tin foil just in case , but no luck. domino Brian Link to comment
alpineaustralia
I had the same problem with the Kato E3. It ended up that the bushes on the motor were not making contact properly and so I bought a new motor assembly fro Japan. Hope you dont have the same problem. Link to comment
CaptOblivious
Just to check: It runs fine without the decoder installed? Thanks all, i think i got it now. domino
alpine, how can a new moter help this problem ? Is the new moter bigger with better connection to the decoder ?? Brian Link to comment
domino
Yes it runs great with out the decoder. Brian Link to comment
alpineaustralia
It ended up having nothing to do with the decoder at all but I thought it did. I dont think it is a decoder problem you. It may be because the motor is not making contact with the decoder or it may be that the motor is no good, ot ir may be that the decoder is not making contact with the contact strips that run along the train. CaptOblivious
I doubt it's a motor issue in this case, if it runs well without the decoder. Sounds like a connectivity issue. The thing to do, I think, is to test the decoder. That said, I'm not entirely sure of the best way to test an EM13, because of its weird shape. I'm guessing you don't have access to a second Kato DCC Friendly train with an EM13 installed that runs well? The best thing to do would be to take this known-good train/decoder, and swap the two EM13s and see which train fails. Link to comment
domino
Hey again Sorry for the late response, i got lost in all the DCC threads i started I switched the EM13 in to another DCC friendly train(KiHA82) and the decoder works fine there, so it is diffinately a connection problem, but i kinda know that, but i cant find a way to fix that ? I have tried to put more presure on both the decoder and the motor clips to make them come closer together, also tried tin foil , but no luck. I think im going to put this decoder installation on hold for some time, just to clear my head from this problem, maybe after a few days i can see the problem easily Thanks all for your help, this is why i love this forum,"help is needed, help is given" domino Brian Link to comment
CaptOblivious
The EM13 has contacts on both sides of the "tines" (if you think of it as being fork-shaped). I know you said you tried tin-foil, but did you try it on each side, or just one side? Perhaps even both sides need it at once (but I don't think this is likely). Link to comment
alpineaustralia
You could try soldering the decoder into position. Link to comment
domino
Still no luck, Did try tin foil on both sides, no luck. Im diffinately NOT going to solder the decoder in place, im really bad at soldering, so im just going to ruin the decoder. Brian Link to comment
nik_n_dad
we've found that if you have the em13 "pushed in" too far, it doesn't work, or works sporadically. Likewise, if you don't push it in far enough it does the same. It seems like there's a spot where the contact is made and is "ideal" before you hit the back of the cavity for the decoder. if you push it in slowly, you'll feel the friction or pressure from the contacts, then you can sort of stop and try. Your mileage may vary, of course ;-) Link to comment

I did try to push it in bit by bit to see/feel if there was a spot where it made perfect contact, but no luck. domino brian Link to comment
nik_n_dad
I'm trying to get the EM13 installed in the kato N700 tonight and no go. tried a different decoder, and still nothing. Train works fine on dc with the original dummy board. arggghhhhh Link to comment
