It's  got me wondering just how slack the crew were to allow this to happen.

Weird also that a uncommanded flow of air didn't effect the spring loaded brakes in said emergency.

One of the things I don't know is whether these cars were air or vacuum braked - IR uses both. Either should apply automatically when the loco was cut off, assuming the train was properly prepared for service to begin with. So either the brake pipe wasn't continuous or charged throughout the train, or someone put the taps up and bottled the air/vacuum when they cut the loco off.

Air-braked - the train is made up of the so-called "LHB" (from Linke - Hoffmann - Busch, the designer - the coaches are made AFAIK by ICF Kapurthala) coaches. These were delivered with air brakes right from the beginning.

 

Vacuum braking in India is being phased out quite rapidly in India.
