It was those stupid I dare you things... Teenagers, their brain is in some warped reality a lot of the time. The reality distortion tends to cause the effect of the more an idea becomes a very bad idea in real reality the more cool the idea becomes in the warped teenage reality. I’m sure a thousand years ago it was the challenge how many horse apples they could eat...
