kvp
A few things translated from the links: -permanent magnet synchronous motors (approximately 20% power consumption reduction) -backup batteries so the train can keep moving to the next station in case of a blackout -led lighting and free wifi (for tourists) -USB chargers near standing locations (imho it looks like the wheelchair area from the drawings) -luggage racks (presumably because of tourists) -communication based train control over digital radio (works but it's not typical for japanese systems) -self steering bogies (works exactly the same way as the DE10-s 3 axle bogie, but without the middle axle, looks and works like old toy train 3 axle cars, but the whole mechanism is in a single bogie and the middle axle is omitted) -will be introduced in 2019 with full change to the new fleet by 2022 Link to comment
trainsforever8
Not sure what to think about the front design, but I definitely like the white on the wheels. Link to comment
bill937ca
Wheels won't stay white long. Link to comment
Kiha66
Could they perhaps be outside frame disk brakes like on the Tokyu 7000 series? Link to comment
Densha
Look like we have a new candidate for the ugliest train topic now... 1 Link to comment

All that solid red color with only a small stripe of white is not to my taste. Now, if they were to paint the new trainset with something similar to this famous livery (as seen on a old 300 Series subway car): https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/9b/TRT-301-Tokyo-Metro-Museum.jpg/640px-TRT-301-Tokyo-Metro-Museum.jpg (image courtesy of Wikipedia) Then it wouldn't be so offensive-looking. The disk brake rings are usually mounted around the center of the wheel and not on the replacable rim. Since this is a standard gauge set with a limited loading gauge and 3rd rail shoes, i would assume the brake pads will be between the wheels. White paint around that area was mostly used for fault detection (making cracks more easily visible), but that went out of fashion a long time ago. I think that's just the silver color of the wheel tires. ( like here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Rollingstock_axle.jpg ) Link to comment

Like this? https://storage.canalblog.com/84/01/129048/119580102_o.jpg In the true style of the original 2000 series trains for the Honancho Branch Line (wich were former Ginza Line 2000 series trainsets transferred in 1959 and repainted). Also i found a couple of alternative, railfan-made designs: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CkgtZs5VEAUt_Ch.jpg https://pds.exblog.jp/pds/1/201712/28/14/f0184514_13502548.png Edited March 28, 2018 by cteno4 Link to comment
ToniBabelony
Not too bad. I understand the white stripes above the window, as you won't be able to see it otherwise with platform doors. Link to comment

kvp
I think i get why the stripes are on the top, that's the only visible area in case of platform doors and side ads. The angled cutoff was used on many late JNR era trains. I would like to see the new self steering bogies though. (these just seem to be the transfer ones) 1 1 Link to comment
Kiha66
I like the throwback red and white paint scheme, with the modern touches. A nice way to build off a classic design. 1 Link to comment

I often see the front covered when a train is being delivered this way in Japan, I believe it's just part of their procedures. We already know what the front is supposed to look like. 1 Link to comment

Sacto1985
I don't know--that much red color looks a bit strange on this new design. Link to comment

trainsforever8
I'm warming up to these, they look better in real life than in the illustration, the interior is very elegant. I'm still not sure about the round windows though.. Link to comment
gavino200
I like it, and will buy a model of it when it's made. Link to comment
kvp
Very retro. Maybe the round windows are a bit too retro. The silver door rail on the bottom front makes the front look like it's making a funny face ( :-, ). Moving the classic Marunouchi band above the platform doors was imho a good idea. 1 Link to comment
