Gryphr
While browsing some train pictures on a site I came across this picture of 2 485 series trainsets coupled together, but I don't recognize the livery of the left one and the site doesn't mention anything about it (as far as I've read it). Does anyone know which livery it is/for which service it was used? It is the third picture on this page:http://type103.heteml.jp/hk/rail/ec/ec485/ec485_tenpai.htm Edited February 21, 2018 by Gryphr 1 Link to comment
miyakoji
I think it's a 583. I cannot find a picture of a 485 in this livery. The only references I can find refer to it as 'former Kitaguni color' written in Japanese as きたぐに旧塗装, Kitaguni kyuu tosou. Tomytec did one: http://www.tomytec.co.jp/tomix/report/n/nj_017.htm prototype: https://blogs.yahoo.co.jp/exptokiwa2/16995324.html 1 Link to comment
marknewton
I think they're 485s, because I've never seen a 583 in the red/cream livery. Cheers, Mark. 1 Link to comment
kvp
They seem to be slightly different types based on the coupled fronts. The name board cutout is also different. Could the two types run together? 1 Link to comment
bikkuri bahn
485 on the right and 583 on the left. On a special train for skiers. Probably mid 1990's like in these videos: 1 2 Link to comment
Kiha66
The left is a 583 while the right is a 485. Notice the slightly more slanted window of the left one. 485s were added to the services when there werent enough 581 sets to meet capacity demands. Kiha66
On occasion 485 motor+trailor pairs would be added inline of a 583 set too, thanks to JNR and their obsessive use of standardization of controls. 2 Link to comment
Kiha66
And sometimes some very strange formations indeed as needs demanded. http://www.geocities.jp/kltd8001/File2372.jpg Edited February 23, 2018 by cteno4 2 Link to comment
Kiha66
A pic like the orginal just zoomed out. (third one down) http://www2u.biglobe.ne.jp/~h_abe/1997.htm And one not involving either type, but a pic that shows there's a prototype for everything! https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DCbCdAAUwAEpUvl.jpg:large Edited February 23, 2018 by cteno4 1 2 Link to comment
disturbman
Indeed, just look at the last car on the picture right under the one mentioned by Gryphr, the last car of that 485 consist seems to be some commuter stock. Probably a 103 cab car. 1 1 Link to comment
Gryphr
Thanks for the answers, guys :) Control standardization is really an interesting thing, gives you some nice possibilities for "wacky" formations :D Hadn't even noticed the different windows on the original pic or the commuter car on the last picture, guess I'll need a better eye for details.
