bill937ca
Not a surprise in Japan. Probably not viewed as acceptable behavior by the railways given education campaigns to keep smart phones and other devices silent. Edited November 9, 2017 by bill937ca Link to comment

cteno4
I can see someone asking about the instruments and then they end up saying do you want to hear and they think the polite smile in response is yes please then once playing everyone froze! But yes definitely not Japanese train etiquette! Sure some liked the oddity while others were probably just in the mode of head down to my station... jeff Link to comment
kvp
Considering many japanese local festival news have things like a band or a singer playing on a local special train or tram, they probably tought this is ok on a normal commuter train too. In Germany train musicians are not always welcommed as this is considered a form of begging (if going around and asking for money afterwards), but they rarely get kicked off the trains, so shorter free concerts are usually tolerated without problems. In Japan it's only ok if you are doing it as an official event. ps: It seems they didn't have enough 'gaijin smash' to get away with it. Link to comment
