Me too. Don't know why they bother to run this type of contest as the absurdity of behavior on the web will just lead to this. It was nice to hear the guy who first proposed it regretted it.

Just look at the Prime Ministers, Presidents, Senators and Mayors we elect democratically world-wide.  Why would you expect anything better from a democratically chosen name?

If you want to put it to a vote as a way of encouraging public interest, then make it a vote on a shortlist rather than a completely open one. Otherwise the wonderfully silly sense of humour displayed by the Internet will give you Boaty McBoatface.
