JR 500系
Toys for adults (not to be confused with Adult toys) is a huge market that can reap in loads of cash if executed in the right way... Toys were meant for kids yes, but toys for adults are in a different category, which mainly emphasis on collectability and detailing. Kids toys mainly emphasis on fun factor and colours and usually based on comic or cartoons instead, like having multiple functions so the kids will have much fun playing with them and wont grow bored easily... Toys like Lego have made a huge turnback after going towards the adult collector market, after being almost bankrupt from the lack of interest in kids. They now even have creators and modular sections which solely entice adults more for their detailing and complexity, and keeping other sections like Bionicles and Friends series to entertain the kids. Perfect strategy that helped Lego turn around so much they're making tons of money now... Model train is another thing, since almost no kids will be interested in them now, with all the android phones and games and all... Hence detailing is the way to go here and we adults like the details on our models don't we? :) Edited April 12, 2017 by JR 500系 Link to comment
Kitayama
A month ago I and my wife went to an exhibition for adult Lego builders. The attached picture is from the rail part of the exhibition. There were also city landscapes, steam punk buildings and a lot of other interesting Lego constructions. Link to comment

kvp
Actually Lego was saved by selling Star Wars Lego sets and now has gone after most film franchises. A few years ago they started the Friends line just for girls and now Disney discovered that if the Star Wars and other movie sets bring in so much profit, they should start a Disney princess line... Adults (aka. afols = adult fans of lego) are just a side business, but the quality of railroad modelling done with Lego is really surprising. The gauge/scale is essentially 0 and this allows everything from the official tinplate like toy sets (city line) to the more detailed and scale correct afol sets (for example: lner a1 and tgv) to the one of a kind hand built models seen at most shows. Btw. Japan has a well hidden, but really talented Lego train crowd with only two groups becoming visible at some internationally known train shows. ps: Lego trains are popular among kids, so in Europe most kids interested in trains have at least one set...
