inobu
In an attempt to document modeling information for the members of the JNS Forum and modeling groups, this thread introduces information pertaining to Kato stations and platform structures. The objective is to present short and concise information that will aid the modelers in layout planning and construction. The planning stages of the layout should be executed in the same fashion as the prototypical world. The size of the platform/station should reflect the number of passengers being serviced in the area in which the layout will represent. This will also dictate the number of lines and trains passing through the station. Platform The platform is the foundation of the station so we will start with the three service types: General - Suburban and Rural also there are two platform types: Island or One sided. The Island: Serves two sides and sits between two tracks. It can be bi or uni directional depending on the configuration. It can also accommodate turnouts to further enhance the stations track capacity. Consideration should be made concerning the type of turn outs used #4 of #6. Here is the complete listing of Kato Island platforms. This information is critical in gathering the right components to construct your station. Island Platform allows for the loading and unloading of passengers on two sides. There are 7 part numbers 23-100 - 23-106 Dimensions: Platform end = 200mm Island platform = 248mm Width = 40mm and tapers to 13mm Basic set is 200mm + 248mm +248mm +200mm = 896mm (35-1/4") Image represents basic (20-806) set + (23-106) 248mm totaling 1144mm (45-3/64") Set KATO 20-806 UNITRACK SET N Scale Island Platform Complete Set Island Platform Complete Set Includes: 23-100 Island Platform, A type 23-101 Island Platform, B type 23-103 Island Platform End, #2 type 23-104 Island Platform End, #3 type Individual Pieces KATO UNITRACK N Scale Island Platform A 23-100 Island Platform A KATO UNITRACK N Scale Island Platform B 23-101 Island Platform B KATO UNITRACK N Scale Island Platform End #1 23-102 Island Platform End #1 KATO UNITRACK N Scale Island Platform End #2 20-103 Island Platform End #2 KATO UNITRACK N Scale Island Platform End #2 23-104 Island Platform End #3 KATO UNITRACK N Scale Island Platform End #4 (1 set) 23-105 Island Platform End #4 (1 set) This comes in a 2 piece set and is slightly larger for the wider #6 turn out. 23-105 is not illustrated in the image but is an optional change to 20-103 and 20-104 KATO UNITRACK N Scale Island Platform D 20-106 Island Platform D This acts as a platform extension These components are one core elements for the Unitrack Viaduct Station. It gives the functionality for a single or multi track station. All though the 23-125 is the larger component the platform is the heart of the configuration. One Sided Platform The One sided platform incorporates a back wall and opens to platform to only one track. Dimensions: Platform end = 200mm Island platform = 248mm Width = 40mm Basic set is 200mm + 248mm +248mm +200mm = 896mm (35-1/4") Image represents One track (20-815) basic set at 896mm (35-1/4") Set KATO 20-815 UNITRACK N Scale One Track Platform Complete Set One Track Platform Complete Set Includes: 23-110 One Track Platform, A type 23-111 One Track Platform, B type 23-112 One Track Platform End, #1 type 23-113 One Track Platform End, #2 type Individual Pieces KATO UNITRACK N Scale One Track Platform A 23-110 One Track Platform A KATO UNITRACK N Scale One Track Platform B 23-111 One Track Platform B KATO UNITRACK N Scale One Side Platform End #1 23-112 One Side Platform End #1 KATO UNITRACK N Scale One Side Platform End #2 23-113 One Side Platform End #2 Key points to keep in mind is that the platform ends creates exact spacing to the platform. Meaning when the correct platform ends are placed inside the turn-outs it maintains the correct spacing to start connecting the S248 tracks, being that the platforms are also 248mm everything is spaced out exactly. Although things seem convoluted all components are engineered rather well. Inobu Next: Unitrack Viaduct station. added dimensions 2 Link to comment

grumbeast
Thanks Inobu, This is just what I need as I put things together. Graham Link to comment
CaptOblivious
Inobu, BTW, do you have the dimensions for these platform parts? Obviously the central pieces are 248mm long, but how long are the end pieces? How wide are the pieces? Link to comment
Mudkip Orange
Inobu, BTW, do you have the dimensions for these platform parts? Obviously the central pieces are 248mm long, but how long are the end pieces? How wide are the pieces? Everything in the old school platform line (i.e., Inobu's post) is either 248 or 200. End pieces (both square AND the inside-R718 curve) are 200, through pieces are 248, and there's also a 248mm inside curve end that's half straight, half curve (i.e., imagine that you layed a 124mm straight and a 718mm curve next to it). The new school platform line matches the old dimensions, with the noted exception that the "flag stop" sets introduce a new 71mm end piece to rectify the mismatch between Kato's standard platform length and the length of a two standard 20m cars. So: 248, 200, 71. Width-wise, all pieces are 40mm at the base, to fit between two Kato tracks (66mm spacing - 25mm trackbed = 41mm) Link to comment
