New N scale layout

inlander

Recommended Posts

Greetings all,

Ive started my new layout. Its  330 x 60 (11 x 2 foot).

First time using the Tomix track.

Layout will run 1960- 1970's prototypes and will be mainly electric, but modellers license is always permitted,

Does anyone have any idea how far apart the catenary upright poles have to be in N scale?

Photos below (its only in the early stages)

To be less cryptic and since you are using Tomix Finetrack, i would say every 280mm on straights (140mm is the basic unit), less in curves (depending on how sharp they are). This aligns well with elevated tracks too, that have dedicated locations for the masts at track joints.

ps: for Kato Unitrack it would be 248-310mm (248mm is the basic unit for Kato and 310mm is the ttrak module unit length)

cryptic?

Are you saying that clicking on a link is somehow challenging or confusing?

Surely you don't mean bikkuri bahn's response to my identical question,

"About 50m, less on curves."

Exciting stuff inlander!  I take it your approach is to build the scenery first, then lay track over it?  Looking forward to seeing your progress!

Velotrain, the linked answer is not good as each track system has a suggested (supported) mast distance. It's not 50 meters in 1:150, but a multiple of each track system's base unit. In these cases slightly less than 50 meters (42 meters for Finetrack and 37.2-46.5 meters for Unitrack). Trying to be too prototypical against the selected track system is usually a bad idea. (to make it worse the linked topic is linking another that has mostly unrelevant information for this question)

ps: to make things worse, the DC catenary around Tokyo is spaced at around 30 meters in straight, so the supported Tomix and Kato variants give a good average

Yes smart islander doing most of the scenery first, so many get frustrated when their scenery mucks up their track work!

Based on general appearance, I'm quite certain this layout has had a prior existence.

The track and structures may be new . . .
