Iyotetsu 5000 type LRT announced

Iyotetsu announced that they purchased two '5000 type' LRTs for their inner city network. These cars will feature WiFi and digital advertisement screens, which means there's no need for hanging paper advertisements. The 5000 type will go into service during September this year.

While the front design and the color scheme is great, the vehicle itself is actually the same as their older 2100 series tram, a type S 'little dancer'. With a length of 12 meters and a capacity of 47 (20 seated), this actually seems less than a normal local bus and way less than the roughly same sized old 50 series with its capacity of 80 (26 seated). This low capacity is imho caused by the relatively large high floor percentage with the true low floor area limited to the section between the two doors.

No, the 5000 series has greater capacity than the 2100 series. The 5000 series dimensions are 12500 x 2300 x 3800 and capacity is 60 with 26 seated.  Capacity of the 2100 series is 47 with 20 seated. Low floor vehicles with wheelchair spaces usually have lower capacity than older high floor vehicles. Most Japanese buses are 9-10m in length.

So by using the high floor spaces above the two bogies and adding another half meter to the length, they managed to add 6 seats and standing space for 13 people. Still about 20 people less than the shorter high floor variant, but these 20 people could account for 4 wheelchair/bike/baby stroller places and the much larger cabs on the ends. At least this new tram seems to be a better replacement for the old 50 series cars, but for me the capacity still looks tiny for a tram, especially compared to other new types.

This is the oldest type of low floor japanese trams, but the cheapest to build and operate. Great for tram lines that need minibus capacity vehicles. The paint scheme is great. I wonder if Tomytec will make it?
