What did you do on your layout today? (N scale)

Well, I spent a silly amount of time painting some pipes yellow.

 

Nothing is glued down in the picture. The blue beams will hold to "I" beams with mobile to use for some special loads. Well, the blue beams won't be blue. They look too plasticky.

 

They will be brown oxide. I used the Tomix rail markers to do the job in 10min.

That's the correct height for the loading docks. The chimney is a good solution for the corner. Also, I may finally glue down the background, although I would lose the chance of taking  photos from some cool angles.

Today I had a lot of fun with kit bashing. The yellow boiler thingy looked a bit boring. So I have done some industrial fantasy with it.

My layout with three tracks at the front and a small yard, now posing as Freight Railway Museum leaves little room for a station.  The solution is two Tomx 4060 Mini Platform sets. It is long enough for three 20m cars. The signs came from a Tomix 4031 platform set and the guard's monitor came from a Tomix 3242 Platform Grade Up set. The guard's monitor base is smaller than the pre-punched hole in the platform and is being a real pain to keep upright. Currently I have two pieces of tape over the hole and a small hole punched in the tape.

I was running in my new Kato C11 this morning.  I've made my small yard into a Freight Railway Museum beside an active train line just like the Japanese museum.  https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/貨物鉄道博物館  This means I can run steamers or my private railway limited express trains in a themed  setting.

 

The Freight Railway Museum has three linear sidings behind and past the station.  There is a row of steamers (Kato C12, C50 and C11) and a sample freight train.

 

The other photo shows the guards monitor at the back of the platform.

Painting anything yellow is like banging your head against a wall. Even with white primer it took me 4 coats to do railings for a storage tank. I sprayed one of the Tomix gas tanks silver (there was paint damage on it) and want to do the railings around the middle and top yellow, that'll take a ton of coats too.

If you're having trouble with yellow I'd recommend trying a white coast first.  I've used that trick for handrails and it usually helps a lot.

Valejo also have various coloured surface primers that stick rather well on a variety of surfaces. They have a 'desert tan' primer that's a medium beige, which should work well for yellow paint.

Try using a light grey undercoat, I remember reading an article over 30 years ago in Model Railroader using this technique and it has worked perfectly.

I have now glued the yellow parts to the layout. I'll post some pictures when I finish the whole factory area. 

 

I have done some research about Vallejo and found out it is such an interesting company. They are in Vilanova i la Geltrú, a small city in the Barcelona metropolitan area, but the company was founded in New Jersey of all places, back in the 1965. They moved to Barcelona in the early 70s apparently to serve a growing European cartoon industry, go figure! The company developed a line of acrylics for artists in cooperation with professors from the University of Barcelona in the 80s. They did not target the model market up until the 1990s. I imagined Mr Vallejo developed contacts in the US and had a good command of English and that helped his company to succeed in the American market. 

 

I have not been able to find much more about Amadeo Vallejo Díaz other than he was an art collector.

Wow Paul! That is just amazing stuff! I bet you found a really good use for those Fujimi construction vehicles!

The larger cat is from the Luck Factory.  http://www.luckfactory.com/manekineko1.html  About 45mm high.

 

The smaller cat is a charm from eBay.  About 15mm high.

 

The large beckoning cats are more common than I would have thought.

I’ll dig up a pict I have of a bank in japan that had 6 like 7’ tall inflatable good luck cats along the front of the bank as a promotion. It was pretty wild and always wanted to model it. Been looking for small enough charms.

The wife disappeared to Brussels over the holiday weekend, leaving me with the kids. So limited work done. 

 

A slow build up of ballast, especially around the points. I made the mistake of rushing around these in the past. I need some 3 track catenarys soon. I'm sure Tomix did some that match the 4 track ones. But I can't seem to find the model number.

 

 

Plus a little bit of green over the tunnel portals.

3005 for the 3-track ones, also 3007 for "flexible" width ones which can cover 3 tracks.

All the 4 track ones already in place. Now ordered 3 boxes of three of the 3 track ones. I was searching for the wrong term. As they call them wire masts. Not catenary.

I had shared this image in discord, and as some of us know, the Kato platforms roof is slightly too high to go under a bridge. I had the viaduct elevated with the empty boxes of Kato DCC decoders ^^.

 

 

But @Yavianice thought, a truss bridge may eliminate the need for those boxes, and may even look better than the viaduct. But Kato doesn't produce long enough bridge elements to cover the gap needed.

May a Tomix bridge work? Nah, different spacing on doubletrack.

 

But wait! Let's try my truss bridges I already own, et voilà:

 

 

But the plastic piece in the middle seem non detachable. Right?

 

Actually, no. Rather easy to remove:

 

 

Still have the bridge elevated slightly with the DCC boxes, looks great now, don't ya think?

Finished another section of ballast. It is unclear from the picture but this area is quite steeply sloping. I’m a little concerned that the top layer, which is loose granite, may shift downhill, but right now I don’t have a glue that won’t discolor it. And it withstood a few trains driving by without an avalanche so that’s good. 

Also, I noticed my double crossover wasn’t firing on all four solenoids. The platform was pressing against the black slider, preventing it from moving easily. Difficult to adjust after all the ballasting and general gluing down of parts! The solution was two cards as shims between track bed and platform. Difficult to see in the pic, because I took a black marker pen to them.
