I wonder why they don't hold it at Okayama, unless Hiroshima is a major depot for freight locomotives....

The depot at Hiroshima is where all electric and diesel locomotives, as well as freight cars assigned to JR Freight's Western Japan division are sent for inspections and heavy overhaul.

 

I've been to this open day once, it's a good one, more nuts and bolts technical and enthusiast-oriented than the typical kiddyfests.

No, it's located on the Geibi Line, adjacent to Yaga Station in the East Ward of Hiroshima City.

I just looked it up using Google Maps in "satellite mode" and not only is the JR Freight locomotive yard located there, but there's also a Shinkansen train yard right next to it (the yard is reached by a special viaduct track from the Shinkansen line, where the Geibi Line follows it right past Yaga Station).
