Kamome
On my current JR Rail tour of Japan we stumbled across the open day at the Shinkansen facility near Sendai. A great opportunity to look around the maintenance sheds and get up close and personal with the E4, E5, E6, E7 and for those early enough to get in the queue, the East-i and E2 from the pantograph inspection deck. There was even an demonstration of them changing a bogie on a E4 Max with it being moved into position and jacked up. And all this with free admission. 6 Link to comment
bikkuri bahn
They run this event annually at the end of July. I've gone twice, IIRC. Good event with better demos* and not as crazy crowded as the the JR Tokai open day event at Hamamatsu (held around the the same time), and given that it's in northern Japan, cooler than the greenhouse-like conditions at the shinkansen depot in Hamamatsu. *the bogie disassembly demonstration is highly recommeded- much better and informative than the run-of-the-mill car body lift demos.
