cteno4
Wow, that is a haul Sam! 3D printer, wow! Cheers Jeff Link to comment
Kiha66
Finished my first print! Used the .stl that came with the printer. It took about three hours, I'm pretty happy with how it came out. 6 Link to comment
Kiha66
Afternoon rain meant that I also finished the kato engine shed today. It's a fun model to build, no glue required. And at $10 what a deal. Vanity shot with my new DD51. Edited January 3, 2017 by Kiha66 4 Link to comment
cteno4
Yeah they are one of the best kits and versatile and some interior details as well. For a while hobby shops about 10 years back had them on fire sale for $4-5 and I bought 10. We usually put 4-6 in a row on 2 of the Shinkansen yard tracks. They pop end to end quite well. Cheers Jeff Now I'm getting ideas, I may have to get a few more. And maybe some yard buildings too... Ordered! Nice to be able to find 10 year old books so easily. Glad it worked out for you tossedman! Started getting the track put together today (temporarily)! The yard and station areas look good, but I'm missing some of the 60mm left and right pieces that match the kato #4 switches, not sure where I'm going to find replacements for those. I am pretty happy with kato's new bent rail buffer, although the black plastic really stands out so it will probably have to be painted at some point. Kiha66
Pouring rain and gale force winds kept me inside today, so I wasn't able to pick up any layout benchwork supplies like I had hoped. Instead I mocked up my layout in SCRAM and finished putting together the track that I have so far. I'm pretty happy with the test fit overall. The lack of S60R and S60L is kinda annoying me though, I wish they could be purchased separately from the #4 switches. 2 Link to comment
Rod.H
One option is to use the single crossover and ignore the sleeper mismatch but it still leaves you short some S60R/L. At least the R481-15 curved track is available separately. Link to comment
marknewton
Got some goodies over the holidays, some from family and a few I had ordered previously. Dan Free's book is certainly worth having. I think youll get a lot of enjoyment from that and learn a lot as well. I know I did. All the best, Mark. Link to comment
Kiha66
Paid a visit to the local home improvement store today. After looking at the cost (and weight!) to build the table myself, I decided to go with a hollow core door for the layout benchwork. I plan to add some wood siding to protect any electronics or wiring below, and maybe use some folding table legs to hold it up. It's currently sitting in the back of the shop waiting for the legs to come in. Link to comment
cteno4
Kiha, Lol so true, so true! Great option, strong and light! I have two in the garage I use on folding sawhorses as my temp work benches on larger projects. They have held up to abuse for a decade now! where you attach the legs you may need to glue some hunks of like 1/2" ply to the door as there is not much to hold screws with the door skin and interior waffle. Usually only framing to grab into in the outer 1.5" or so. Use a good glue like gorilla glue to really stick on the pads of wood and should hold well. If you drill any holes thru for wiring you can use straws to go through your holes to feed the wires thru as they can be infuriating to get to go thru both skins at times! Cheers Jeff Link to comment
Kiha66
I've joined the world of DCC! Got the digitrax decoder and installed it into my Kato DD51, bit of a pain since the slot its supposed to fit into is thinner than the PCB the decoder is made out of, but some quick filing got it to fit. I still need to trim the light pipes, but it runs like a champ! Ordered some kato em13's for my EMU and DMUs, but it seems that most places are sold out of the lighting decoder or want to charge double the price. Next loco up is my kato ED16, not sure what sort of decoder will fit, as the one for the DD51 is too long to fit under the shell. Also going to try adding a decoder to my kato C62 and 9600 SL, anyone have a recommendation for a decoder that will fit? Link to comment
