cteno4
A graphic artist took 2 years rendering a kuha 103 emu in cad. Spectacular! miyakoji
heheheh, I just read that email a few minutes ago. Spectacular for sure. It's like a brand new 50 year old train. Link to comment
ToniBabelony
Insanity! That's some hyper detailed work and it looks very solid. Not just photorealistic, but actually realistic. Link to comment

ToniBabelony
Careful Toni, I see you there in a few years! You know what, if I had the finances, I'd already be doing complete models like this. Link to comment
cteno4
I figured! I could feel the wheels turning in your head when you saw this of what bank to knock off so you could spend your time making these! Jeff Link to comment
Densha
Imagine driving this in a train simulator game in VR... Link to comment
kvp
Since all of the hidden details are also drawn correctly, this is more like a complete full scale 3D manufacturing plan than a simple model. I would think modern japanese trains are also drawn to such detail before manufacturing. It looks like he managed to digitize all of the original plans. More impressive if he didn't have full plans and had to work from measurements and/or photos. Link to comment
mrp
More impressive if he didn't have full plans and had to work from measurements and/or photos. It looks like he had copies of at least some plans. I think he's saying he got them from something called CLUB103, so I guess he's talking about this collection here. Amazing what's available.. Link to comment
kvp
Wow, that means they maybe have the full control system documentation? I'm looking for the 103 and/or 113 series electrical plans for years. (especially the traction subsystem and multiple unit control part) Link to comment
Martijn Meerts
He must have a pretty decent machine in order to model something with that amount of detail. I used to do some high detail architectural modelling, and computers at the time had major issues handling it all. And those models were nowhere near as detailed as this thing :D Link to comment
kvp
Well, computer modelling has come a long way and one common trick since long is to make the model modular. This means main dimensions are matched and submodels are added in a tree. This allows variable level of detail to be turned on and to only use the full detail, all components view with a batch rendering tool, that could take quite some time to draw everything. This also keeps the memory requirements down during component construction besides allowing fast rendering for smaller parts. The linked document is actually the hvac piping which i've seen being assembled on some old movies. I'm looking for the electrical diagram. I would be grateful if someone could speak with the mentioned group and could get the plans in an online or offline form. (i'm willing to pay for them if there is no digital copy available) Link to comment
cteno4
There is a very very strong and loyal 103 fan base in Japan. Profit of the way on jtrains yahoo groups was noting the other day that the main editor of the 103 wiki page is one of these and tends to edit away or bury in piles of tech any of the 103's short comings, so to take the page with a large dose of salt... While having a rabid fan base can make great things happen it can also lead to fanaticism (and hence the term fan)! Jeff Link to comment
