Kiha66
I believe that the JNR 485 series used the same pantagraph for both AC and DC, and had switching equipment on the roof to make the change between systems. Based on the last picture it would seem that the 001 series has a similar arrangement. Edit: I found a picture of the system the 485 series used. Sacto1985
The Shiki-shima trainset needs a very complex overhead power system because it has to be able to use at least 1,500 V DC, 20,000 V AC 50 Hz (used in JR East territory), and 25,000 V AC 50 Hz (for traversing the Seikan Tunnel). And that's in addition to hybrid diesel power for operation in non-electrified territory in many parts of Hokkaido. Small wonder why the Twilight Express Mizukaze trainset is diesel hybrid power only so it can run anywhere in JR West territory and eventually even short trips to (maybe) Kokura and Mojiko on the JR Kyushu Kagoshima Main Line. bill937ca
Seems like everyone is getting these dark colored luxury trains. Wasn't JR Kyushu the first with the current crop of super-luxury trains? And look where the Kyushu Railway is now. bikkuri bahn
JR Kyushu has been smart in diversifying beyond just running a railway. It also helps that it serves a densely populated region with attractions located relatively close together, and being near prosperous Asian nations (Hokkaido, otoh, sparsely populated, attractions spread out, nearest countries Russia and N. Korea, ugh...) 2 Link to comment
Sacto1985
JR Kyushu has been smart in diversifying beyond just running a railway. It also helps that it serves a densely populated region with attractions located relatively close together, and being near prosperous Asian nations (Hokkaido, otoh, sparsely populated, attractions spread out, nearest countries Russia and N. Korea, ugh...) Well, JR Kyushu has the advantage of serving one of the few fast-growing areas in Japan in 2016 (the Fukuoka-Kitakyushu corridor, well-served by a lot of train service) and the fact JR Kyushu has aggressively promoted its tourism trains. Indeed, I think JR Kyushu can barely keep up with the demand for limited express service between Kokura and Hakata Stations with the Sonic and Kirameki trains. Link to comment
