I have just purchased the the Kato EF81 Twilight Express, painted green and yellow (Kato 3021-7). Just like StevenH's avatar.

Does anyone know if Kato also make the carriages for that train? If so, what is the Kato item number?

I know Tomix make carriages for the Twilight Express

Series 24 Twilight Express 7-Car Set (Tomix 92623)

Series 24 Type 25 `Twilight Express` (5 Cars Add-on Set A) (Tomix 92241)

Series 24 Type 25 `Twilight Express` (3 Cars Add-on Set B) (Tomix 92242)

Type Sushi 24 (Twilight Express) (Tomix 8514)

Surone 25-500 Twilight Express (Sleeping Car) (Tomix 2579)

What is the difference between these Tomix sets?

What is protypical? the 7 car set? 8 car set? other?

Do Tomix carriages come with couplers other than rapido/Arnold couplers?

Can the Tomix carriages be used with the Kato EF81?

The Tomix version was released as 3 sets, 92240, 92241, 92242, and an additional car with lit table lamps. The following is the complete train (according to the Tomix catalog):

Locomotive: EF81, running numbers included are 43, 44, 48, and 105 (92240)

Car 1: SURONEFU 25-500 compartment car (92241)

Car 2: SURONE 25-500 compartment car (92242)

Car 3: SUSI 24-0 dining car (92241 or 8514 for lit table lights)

Car 4: OHA 25-550 saloon car (92241)

Car 5: OHANE 25-520 compartment car (92241)

Car 6: OHANE 25-520 compartment car (92242)

Car 7: OHANE 25-510 compartment car (92242)

Car 8: OHANE 25-560 sleeping car (92241)

Car 9: OHANEFU 25-500 sleeping car (92240)

Unnumbered car: KANI 24-0 luggage van (92240)

So, you could combine the Kato loco with the Tomix cars, but you'd be missing car number 9 and the unnumbered luggage van, since both of those are included with the locomotive set.

As for Kato making the cars, I would expect that if they release the loco, they also have the cars available. It makes no sense releasing the loco without the cars.

I'm not sure, there is nothing about them on Kato's website. This loco is a Roundhouse production, not a normal one.

I also looked around on Yahoo auctions and there is only Tomix stuff and one EF81 loc by kato if you search twilight Express (トワイライトエクスプレス). It might be possible that it's been a very long time that a run of Twilight Express's coaches was made.

It's been a while since the previous production run yes, but Tomix is doing another run with a release scheduled for October =)

Sorry, I was not clear. I meant to say: "it's must be a while that Kato didn't produced any coaches for the Twilight Express".

I am still a little confused about the

Series 24 Twilight Express 7-Car Set (Tomix 92623)

Type Susi 24 (Twilight Express) (Tomix 8514)

Surone 25-500 Twilight Express (Sleeping Car) (Tomix 2579)

and how they fit in with 3 sets made by Tomix.

Also do Tomix carriages come with couplers other than rapido/Arnold couplers?

Can the Tomix carriages be used with the Kato EF81?

Tomix 8514 is a dining car with lights installed in the table lamps, and it replaces the Susi24 that comes with 1 of the sets.

Not sure what the 92623 set is, it might be an older release. Same goes for the 2579 sleeper car.

In the 2008 Tomix catalog, the Twilight Express is listed with the numbers/cars I mentioned earlier, and those are also the ones that Tomix is re-releasing in October. All Tomix cars are with standard Rapido couplers, so they should work just fine with the Kato locomotive.

I believe so, but Tomix knuckle couplers aren't compatible with Kato knuckle couplers.

Has anyone installed lights in Series 24 Twilight Express 7-Car Set (Tomix 92623)?

If so, what lights did you use?

If you have this set, can you please scan and send my a copy of the instructions sheet that came with the set?

Cheers

Hi!

about Twilight set a little schema of 10 cars original

old release

92623 7 cars set

2578 ohane 25-520 (you need 2)

2579 surone 25-500

2134 EF81 loco (sold separately)

new release

92240 start set (1 loco and 2 cars)

92241 set A (5 cars)

92241 set B (3 cars)

8514 SUSI 24-0 Dinning car whit illuminated lamps (to exchange whit the same car included in set A whitout lamps)

it's strange, the single loco still appear on catalog.. boh...(maybe for double traction?)

difference between sets, the last is a little bit painting improved, some decals are now factory applied/painted so you don't need more works (it's hard to merge old and new set because the cars you need are part in A and part in B set so it's much simple to buy the complete set)

lights: you need (for full 10 cars set)

4 x 0755 or 0783 or 0733 OHANE 25-520 X 2, OHANE 25-510, SURONE 25-500 OHA25-550

6 x 0751 or 0781 or 0731 the rest...

(075x normal set, 078x costant light, 073x costant light white led items code from last catalog, white led kit have new code)

Kato has never reproduced Twilight cars, only the Loco (Roundhouse release)

if you want I have the instruction paper but for the new set not for the old....

I hope this help you  :cheesy

ciao

It's not strange for TOMIX and KATO to release locomotives without matching coaches. For example, TOMIX has the "Rainbow" livery of some locomotives (huge matching logo on the side of EF81/ED75 etc.) but didn't produce the "Rainbow" coloured Joyful Train. Same as with the DE10 in 'retro' brown livery from TOMIX, that usually hauls older steel bodied cars, didn't had matching cars for a long time.
