Nagasaki Tram Derailments & Service Suspension

For the second time since September a Nagasaki Electric Tramway car has derailed on the junction at Kokaido-Mae station  where tram 3 turns off toward JR Nagasaki. As of June 3 line 1 is running and there is partial service on line 5.  Lines 3 and 4 are suspended.  Asahi Shimbun Digitial Japanese language news story.

 

During the line 3 service suspension over the winter line 2 operated as a substitute.  Line 2 is usually  a first trip, last trip combination of lines 1 and 3.

The translated story says "wear of the rail is responsible".  About 40 metres needs to be replaced.  As it is special work it may need custom castings which take time.

Due to the impact of the derailment accident in Kokaidomae that occurred on June 2, 
June 5 (Sunday) and 6 days (month) also will be suspended service part than the first train.

In other words, the mentioned services will be suspended on 5 and 6 June. If all goes well, services will obviously resume on 7 June.

Operation has resumed some service from 1530 hours 2016 June 10. 

 

Part of the normal service was resumed to inform.

On June 2th - occurred in the derailment, influenced by the part I have been suspended, but the 10th (Sat) 15:30 "ROUTE 3" Red-go except we resumed its operation .

Route 1 (Red-⇔ shogaku) usually under operation

Transportation Safety Board issued a report January 17, 2017 on the four accidents at this junction since 2007. The cause was a rear truck wheel striking the guard nose during the turn on the R20 radius curve.

Starting in March 2017 this curve will be rebuilt, increasing the radius from R20 to R35.

Speed of 13 k/h was cited once as a partial cause, but the most recent derailment occurred during a 5 k/h turn, half the 10 k/h limit.
