miyakoji
Here are two pages with pictures by Arnold Genthe, a German-born photographer who moved to San Fransisco when he was in his twenties. In 1908 he traveled to Japan and took pictures there. Very interesting, clear images. My impulse is always to try to determine the location of photographs, but I'm not having much luck with these. I see Osaka and Kotohira on some signs, but they're not showing direction or distance to a place, so I'm not sure. http://www.mymodernmet.com/profiles/blogs/arnold-genthe-japan-photo http://mashable.com/2016/05/19/arnold-genthe-japan/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arnold_Genthe (slightly NSFW, page includes a nude) 5 Link to comment
Darklighter
I only recognize the Shinkyo bridge (Nikko) and the Itsukushima Shrine (Miyajima). Link to comment
ToniBabelony
Very nice pictures and quite interesting ones as well. In these old pictures you usually see a few western style attires here and there, but in these pictures, any western fashion influence seems totally and utterly absent, apart from the odd hat. It's nice to see people from the non-Tokyo area from this era once in awhile. :) Link to comment
