Sacto1985
YouTube member chihaya1022 did a series of very interesting videos of the side view of the Komachi Shinkansen train between Tokyo and Akita, the Kagayaki Shinkansen train between Tokyo and Kanazawa, and the Nozomi Shinkansen train between Tokyo and Hakata, with embedded GPS information on the whole trip: Komachi from Tokyo to Akita: Kagayaki from Tokyo to Kanazawa: Nozomi from Tokyo to Hakata: While the information is not completely accurate due to the long tunnels on these routes, it's still an interesting watch when you see the trains approach their top speeds. Note that on the Komachi train, the top speed up to Utsunomiya is only 270 km/h, then north of that the top speed approaches 320 km/h. On the Kagayaki train, between Omiya and Takasaki, the top speed is only 240 km/h, then beyond that the top speed approaches 260 km/h. On the Nozomi train, between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka, the top speed is 270 km/h (this train is not one of the few trains that does 285 km/h between Maibara and Kyoto), but west of Shin-Osaka, the speeds approach 300 km/h. 5 Link to comment
Sacto1985
This same YouTube member also posted a similar format video of the Hitachi limited express from Shinagawa to Iwaki Stations, most of it on the Jōban Line: Note that the top speed of 130 km/h seems pedestrian compared to the Shinkansen videos. 1 Link to comment
miyakoji
I can handle those side-view videos a lot better when the camera is angled. When it's straight out the window, it kinda makes me dizzy :(. Link to comment
JR 500系
Mighty interesting! Thank you for sharing! Subscribed! Also note how early each starting trip is.... around only 6am! 1 Link to comment
Robert46
Thanks for sharing the videos Sacto :) very cool it using a speedometer. What was the on board device he used to measure the speed? Actually I rather like the normal window view so it feels like we ride a real train. But this one is unique. Thanks. Will subscribe as well. Link to comment
cteno4
I think the graphics are part of the Sony software that comes with the camera (it stores gps data) Jeff Link to comment
Robert46
I think the graphics are part of the Sony software that comes with the camera (it stores gps data) Jeff Yeah, I think so Jeff, sony camera is great, Japan always be at front for high tech electronic devices.. however, when I watched video carefully last night, the speed recorded seems not really accurate representing the real speed. and I feel like had a headache watching them for about 40 minutes.. katoftw
GPS systems are never accurate when representing real speed. Edited March 18, 2016 by katoftw Link to comment
