Can someone ID this train?

Sorry I was browsing youtube and found this interesting video of the 'approaching train melody'... Quite catchy...

Until around 2:04 when the 681/ 683 passes the station... It seems to have a 9 car train coupled with a 2 car. What seems to be this formation?

I know the following formations:

Thunderbird[edit]

← Osaka Kanazawa/Wakuraonsen → 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 R R R R NR NR NR R R

Shirasagi

Services are normally operated using Kanazawa-based 681 series and 683-8000 series EMUs formed as 6-, 6+3-, or 6+3+3-car formations.

Dinostar

Trains are normally formed as shown below, with car 1 at the Kanazawa (eastern) end. All cars are no-smoking.[3]

Car No. 1 2 3 4 5 6 Accommodation Green Reserved Reserved Reserved Non-reserved Non-reserved

From the start of the revised timetable introduced on 26 March 2016, some services (Dinostar 1 and 6) will operate as three-car

formations with no Green car

Didn't see a 9 + 2 so felt it was very strange.... Or did I counted wrongly?

I count 12 cars.

My bad... It seems here are 3 cars at the end, making a 9 + 3...

Based on the 9 and 3 car formation it's a Thunderbird:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thunderbird_(train)

Sounds logical, but I have never seen a 9 car full Thunderbird... Goggling the Thunderbird formations:

  • 3号車には女性専用席があります。
  • 女性専用席は、女性及び同伴の小学生以下の男児に限りご乗車になれます。
  • 大阪~金沢間は12両編成で運転する日があります。

It seems to have a 6 + 3, with a green car (Kuro 683 or 681) at one end. This formation has no Kuro cars... Also:

There is a 12 car, but it's a 6 + 3 + 3 ...

I'll look carefully again at the video to see if it is truly a 6 + 3 + 3, or really a 9 + 3...

It is an actual 9+3 train.

Compare the car composition to  this: https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/JR%E8%A5%BF%E6%97%A5%E6%9C%AC683%E7%B3%BB%E9%9B%BB%E8%BB%8A#.E7.B7.A8.E6.88.90.EF.BC.88683.E7.B3.BB.EF.BC.89

Looks like a 9-car 4000 series + 3-car 2000 series Thunderbird.

Bingo! Thanks for the headsup! Is this formation somewhat rare? Cause we see a man trying to video it....

Might be, as there's no easy to find information on it. On the other hand, it's Japan. There's always someone filming a train. :grin

The train runs in 12 car formations when the demand warrants it. The JR West website says the train occasionally is run at such a length.

Thanks! Mystery solved!  :)

Just another ID required... Recently the Kintetsu bug bit me hard and I am now trying to expand my Kintetsu fleet... I have the Shimakaze, Iseshima Liner and coming Urban Liner NEXT, and is now looking for the 4th candidate for the Kintetsu lines. I decided on the upcoming Vista-DX by Tomix, and then I saw on youtube there were SO MANY types of formations available...

This one is by far the most interesting:

In the first part of the video, Am I right if the formation is:

16400 x 2 - Vista-EX x 4 - 22600 x 2?

The 2nd part is:

22600 x 2 - _______ x 4?

Thanks in advance!

1st train has 22000 on the lead, bound for Namba. The second part, the four car formation is 12200 series, coming from Namba. This was a weekend special, trains to/from Namba and Yamato Saidaiji were uncoupled or coupled at Yamato Yagi, other destination was Nagoya.

This kind of operation occurs more frequently at Yamato Saidaiji, for ltd expresses bound for Kyoto, originating in Nara and Kashihara Jingu Mae.

Interesting... Is the key to the end car doors that connect to the other train held by the station staff? It always seem that the staff at the station will pass a key to the conductor or driver and he will then proceed to open the connecting door...

Also, is it just me or does Kintetsu couple trains REALLY fast? I mean, the approaching train drives in and stops like just 2m away from the front train, and then almost 2-4 seconds later proceed to drive forward to couple to the front train... Also, strange to see that the uncoupling train at the rear end will reverse away just to ensure decoupling is completed before the front train moves away....

Here's how JR West couple and uncouple their 283 series... Notice how far the rear train stops before finally and slowly connect to the front... And no reversing for uncoupling procedure...

I reckon Kintetsu couples up quickly because the schedule demands it, JR West is operating these services on a less demanding schedule in rural areas. As for the backing up, I am not sure, but perhaps it has to do with keeping individual train integrity wrt to brakes, electrical systems, etc as the backing up train will shortly depart on a revenue run after the forward train leaves. Otoh the after portion of the JR West service will terminate at that station, and go out of service.
