Films on Japanese railways

Sorry Guys,

I didn't know where else to put this.

I've been watching YouTube videos on Japanese railways, but they are hard to find as the titles can be a bit odd. I basically find the ones I watch by luck.

I've just been watching a run of 'programs' on YouTube that get to 6 and seem to stop? the presenter is a horrific actor, but there is some interesting info within the program, if you can turn a blind eye to the commentary.

does anybody know where I can go to see full size Japanese railway videos or programs. I'd like to tee steam, freight, passenger and Bullet ( not all on one vid)

Thanks.

Rob,

Sorry what do you mean get to 6 and then stop?

There are loads of Japanese train videos on YouTube. Using some Japanese character search terms in Google may help.

There are lots of train DVDs also. You will need a region free player (some pcs are thus) to view them in the uk as Japan is region 2.

Jeff

Ps moved to the Japanese train and vid forum as I figured you were talking about prototypes here, let me know if otherwise.

The six programs were made by the same guy and he said it was a series. Just seemed to stop at 6 as if he lost interest??

There are tons of other short clips on YouTube, but that one (acting aside) seemed to have some interesting stuff in it.

Thanks for moving the thread :-)

I'll have a look for DVD's, but I expect they could work out very expensive?

Hi Rob,

I have had mixed success with U Tube. I have typed in JNR 9600 or C57/55/61 and this helped. Usually gives links to other sites.

Yeah, they can be but there are some YouTube producers that do great and complete jobs. Take a look thru the photo and video forum here as folks have found some really nice rides and producers. Few here love these videos so ask some questions on those threads and maybe some more answers and ideas.

One way to find Japanese rail line videos is to try searching on the line you want.  For instance the Yamanote Line:

https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=yamanote+line
That will bring up videos with the Yamanote Line in them.  Then you look for videos that have the entire line by looking how long they are.  In the case of the Yamanote Line, the loop takes an hour so when I see an hour long video I know that it includes the entire trip.  Once you've watched that, you can click on the creator's page and see what else they've put up.  Watch a few of those and pretty soon Japanese rail videos start showing up in your recommended videos and you don't have to look for them, they come to you.  Nice lines to search for are the Toden Arakawa and Keikyu in Tokyo.  The Enoden in Enoshima, The Odakyu  out of Tokyo, The Hakone Tozen, the Hiroden in Hiroshima.  That should be enough to get you started.

YouTube just seems very random.

I watched a 2 hour cab ride the other day, how sad am I ??

Loved it though

Cab rides can be rather mesmerising really. I'm not really that much into the prototype trains, I certainly don't do the whole railfanning thing. But somehow I do find myself watching cab rides on occasion, preferably the smaller lines and things like the Enoden etc.

I don't know what kind of programs you are actually looking for, but there are many YouTube channels out there that have high-quality footage. using Japanese terms also helps when looking for specific trains, lines or train companies. You can easily find these terms using Wikipedia or Google Translate, although the latter does not always translate things entirely correctly as you may know. There's also channels in documentary style, but they often require a certain level mastery of the Japanese language. This one is a good example of that: https://www.youtube.com/user/RailKingJP

NHK (the Japanese public broadcoaster) also broadcasts programs on Japanese railways in English. There are already topics on JNS about these shows:
