Kitbashing a Main Station

Recommended Posts

Here is my next project. I need to finish my Main station on my layout. I've compared the Kato and Walther's Butterfly platforms and my personal preference in the Walthers. (Price was also a factor)

The 1st photo show the comparison. There is a height difference but I made that up by building up the upside of the platforms.

The 2nd and 3rd Photos show you the area I'm going to Kitbash plus the built up platforms.

I've order 2 more Kato Overhead Station kits with the idea of Kitbashing the three structures into one Main station.

The next photos show the 2 new stations that just arrived with 3 different angles of the stations. This will all have to be kitbashed directly to the layout for exact measurements.

Looking good Bernard, I hadn't thought about kitbashing an overhead station before. I doubt that Id need anything as massive as your station will be. Im curious will your platforms accommodate 16 cars it looks like it will.

Bernard, can you place the stations on the layout so that we can get a beter idea of what you are proposing?

That's the problem, my layout is in our Summer home 5 hours away. That is way progress on the layout has been slow.

Summer home!!!?? I'm going to start calling ya Mr. Rockefeller :)

Station looks great and can't wait to see it completed.

Far from it, we were supposed to move up there, but the work situation didn't work out.

Bernard,

hey cool, keep posting picts of you progress. i have been thinking of doing something like that with kato overhead stations (ala the tomix versions) as i have 4 of them here (got three of them very cheap when a dealer went out of biz). also just suggested to someone they could try this to span 4 tracks (2 mainline and 2 passing with two platforms), so would love to point him to your work for ideas!

cheers

Finally, I was able to get in 2 hours work on my layout. My wife had a family reunion this weekend and we worked for 3 days getting ready for it.

The 1st photo is the station as a whole and the 2nd photo is the part I had to cut off.

The next photo are again showing the roof and then what I had to cut off.

The next set is the base of the station and the alterations.

The last set is the results of fitting the new stations in with the old one I already had. (It's the gray station, I'll have to paint the new ones a matching color.

The 2st photo is the fit with one station and the last is the complete fit. I still have a lot more work to do with completing the transformation but I had to mow the lawn. :cheesy

What did you end up using to cut off the piece you didn't need? And how did it go?

Link to comment

My teeth. :grin

I measured the station next to the other station and determined what I would need to cut off. I scored the styrene with an Xacto knife and then cut it with a fine Xacto back saw. I then used sand paper to smooth down the cut. I think I'm going to have some trimming to do on the center roof.

Oh, yes, just about what I have in mind.  Thanks!

The station here will be on a (long) TTrak module, 2 main lines each with a siding.

So, this is just about what I had envisioned.  When they get out of the boxes, I'll post.

Joe - Welcome to the Forum! I know what you mean about not wanting to destroy a model in your other post. The surprise to me is the difference between the older version of the overhead station and the 2 new ones. The older one I assembled completely and the new ones were already assembled. The coloring is also different as well as the windows. I hope to get back to it in August and I really hope I don't have to reposition the tracks. I know the track closest to the edge of the table, my DCC programming track is going to have to be shortened to allow figures to enter and exit the station. (otherwise they would have to stand on the tracks to get in. :BangHead: :cat:)

Everyone this is the guy i have been calling texas joe who turned me onto the ru21 reversing unit and was interesting in doing a double kato station. hes also doing some fun little streetcar loops on his ttrak and is getting interested more and more with japanese trains! catch his progress here: http://wtexjoe.blogspot.com/

After looking at his blog, I'll say Joe is a great addition!

Joe - Being from Texas, do other modelers question you as to why you're modeling Japanese trains?

there were a few chaps in texas that had a large japanese layout planned call the J project. they even did a scouting trip to japan a year or so back to get ideas. they wanted to do lots of tokyo area stations in big scale. think they were planning a bunch of modules like 2' x 4'.

have not heard much from them in the last year. some info up on their website

steve and adam met up with jrm folks at the n scale convention when it was in dc like 5-6 years back. we have been in touch with them on and off over the years.

No, they're used to me by now <BG>.  At the last setup I had two trains running - a Doctor Yellow

and a Brit 168 DMU.  No US stuff rolling - left that to the others.  Everyone seemed to like them.

I'm 'negotiating' for two more high speed trains and just bought one of the 'Romance' trains.  I like

the variety from around the world and across time.

be careful of the romance trains, they are tempting mistresses! the run so well as well and look good on even tight radius curves, oooooo.... oops starting to sound risque!

Maybe I shouldn't open the package at work when my 3000 arrives....

LOL, especially if anyone asks and you say you just got a romance train... im sure all sorts of odd things will flash through their minds. dont know your work place, but maybe you want that to liven it up some!

Bernard, As I ploted against my terminal stations, I decided that I wanted the combined units to be offset, not aligned square.  Now that some more pieces have arrived, I'll do a mockup and take pictures sometime next week.

Texas Joe - (I took out the West to make it shorter :grin) Because of work I probably won't get to work on the station till mid-late August. I curious what you do with the offset of your station. Looking at your work on the other station gave me an idea as to how to align the legs on the one I'm building.

Finally! I got to do some work on the Overhead station. There was a lot of measuring and constant fitting with the track alignment. Here are 3 photos of the results of joining the 3 stations together. One of the stations was the earlier model of the Kato station and the dimensions, structure & color are different from the other 2.

My next step is to paint the structure a matching gray color and add bottom supports. (I hope the LHS up here has the materials I need?)
