It looks like the EMU in the first photo may have sometimes been used to power the ballast train.

Aaaaahhh... Ichibata Densha's DeHaNi 50

I'd love to see that DeHaNi 50 restored to at least occasional service during holiday periods. Would certainly keep YouTube member nimo5 busy.  :)

Luckily, DeHaNi 50 is also used for driving trials (運転体験) at Ichibata Densha   the trials are normally performed at a section of the track inside the Unshu-Hirada station (where Ichibata Densha's depot is located there)
